Geno has a well-known history of being a total jacka$$ off the court. I am disappointed in the outcome of the game and that UConn won another championship. At least it has been nine years, so we had a bit of a break from his hubris. Perhaps that is why he mellowed a bit--he had stopped winning championships and even missed a Final Four or two, IIRC.
His mellowed because he’s older, and he realizes that at best, he’s got 30 more years on this earth
Regardless, he embraces the villain roll, and as someone who has always rooted for the bad guys, I like that about him
With all the respect to Pat Summit, Tennessee wasn’t exactly playing by the rules all those years, so when she called out Gino during the Maya Moore recruitment, he didn’t back down, stood his ground, and eventually overtook Tennessee as a preeminent program and women’s college basketball
Similar to Kevin Boyle and Bob Hurley Senior would go ahead to head, and Hurley was illegally Recruiting and then got mad when St. Patrick’s decided to do the same
Even though I always wrote it for Saint Anne’s because of Hurley, Boyle was giving him a taste of his own medicine, and he didn’t like it
I’m not particularly fond of the man, but I have an immense amount of respect for him that he did not back down to the legend
