Scouting report of Washington...

Guards:
Isaiah Thomas: 5'8" pg, but don't be fooled by the height. Pac-10 Freshman of the Year and averages almost 16 a game. Not a great outside shooter, gets most of his points from the foul line and lay ins. Not a great individual defender, but a decent team defender. Very quick. Is able to drive on pretty much anybody, although your big guy could present some problems for his game.

Justin Dentmon: 5'11" pg. He's a senior and the Pac-10 Most Improved player as well as a 1st team Pac-10 selection. 2nd leading scorer at about 15 a game. Used to be a great outside shooter, but has struggled a little bit of late. Decent defender, a little bit better than Thomas. All around decent player. Some games he will explode and go for 25+, but most likely he will end up in the 12-15 range against you guys. Scores within the game and doesn't force things, so you won't notice him that much.

Forwards:

Quincy Pondexter: 6'7" F Was a 5 star coming out of high school and thought to be a bust but has been very good this year. Decent team defender, super athletic. Can hit the open jump shot, but will score most of his points down low slashing and posting up. Will get about 4 ppg on offensive putbacks. Very aggressive on the offensive glass.

Darnell Gant: 6'8" F. He is a role player for us and pretty much just brings a defensive presence, intensity, and rebounding. Will be lucky if he scores 4 points in the game. Can guard all 5 spots on the floor. First game against ASU he guarded 1st team All American guard James Harden and shut him down in the first half and kept him in check in the 2nd half. He will probably be the one that guards Varnado to start the game.

Jon Brockman: 6'7" F. An absolute beast. Generally regarded as the top rebounder in the country (Blake Griffin may have something to say about that). 1st Team Pac-10, will be 2nd or 3rd team AA, and is in the final 10 for the Wooden Award. He sometimes struggles with taller posts though. He will go all out every second of the game and will just plain beat you up for 40 minutes. He will not try to go over top of Varnado because he knows he can't do that, he will try to go straight through him. This should be a fun matchup to watch.

6th man:
Venoy Overton: 5'11" pg. I can almost guarantee you before the game starts that you will hate him by the time the game is over. If you go to any of our opponents' boards and ask their opinion of him, he will get blasted. Bottom line is that he is a guy that you love to have on your team and hate to play against. He is one of the top on-ball defenders in the country and will probably pick your pg clean at least twice. Hardly any offensive game to speak of (can't shoot, can drive and draw fouls though) although that's not his game. He will get up in the face of the guy that brings the ball down the court and generally make life miserable for him. He does talk a lot of trash on the court and will most likely get into your players head, but won't do anything physically dirty. I'm not sure what you pg is like, but it would be good for you guys if he was an unflappable guy and not a headcase.

Defense:

Strictly Man-to-Man. Very aggressive style. Back door cuts usually work well because we play so close to our man. Our guards are small, but they are all very quick and cause a lot of problems. Post defense is mediocre. Probably our best post defender comes off of the bench, but he tends to foul quickly. Varnado may have a big game. You may read on Washington boards that our 3-point defense is weak, but that is not true. We have the 2nd best 3-point defense in the Pac-10 at .319%.

Offense:

Top scoring offense in the Pac-10 at about 80ppg. Motion offense. Run the fast break any chance possible. Don't shoot many 3's, but drive to the hoop a lot. This is where Varnado comes into play. Shoot quite a few mid-range jumpers, but most of our shots come from inside the paint. A huge part of our offense is offensive rebounding. We will consistently send 4 or 5 guys to the glass non-stop and just pound the glass. I believe that we are the 2nd best rebounding team in the country at +7.9 rpg margin.

I think that's about it.

Edit: Realized I spelled Varnado wrong.

For us, Varnado is a freak in the middle. He tied Shaq's conference single season record for blocked shots last year and then broke it this year. Trying to score in the lane is definitely a no-no when he's in the game. He blocks 1 out of every 6 opponent 2-point shots when he's in the game. We will see a matchup of two of the best freshmen PGs in the country in Dee Bost and Isaiah Thomas. The wildcard for us could be Kodi Augustus. He stayed in the coach's doghouse for most of the conference season, but has emerged at the beginning of our late season 6-game win streak. </p>

first off, Isiah Thomas? Really?

Secondly, you will find you have something in common with me and many other posters on this board. I freaking hate Oregon.

Good thing about Oregon. You will make many friends in Washington if you tell them that. The story behind Isaiah Thomas is that his dad was a Lakers fan and he had a bet with a friend when they played the Pistons in the NBA Finals. He ended up losing the bet and had to name is kid after Isiah Thomas. His mom let it slide because she wanted a bible name, so they changed the spelling of it to be like a bible name. He's already sort of a legend in the Seattle area from when he was a Junior in high school. He average 41 points a game in the high school tournament and put up 51 in one game. He had grade problems so he reclassified and went to South Kent Prep in Conncecticut for two years to become eligible.

I realize a lot of fans say this about their team, but we are a different team then we were at the start of the season. We started the season with a loss to Portland (Portland!) and then got blown out by Kansas. The Florida game was the turning point of our season as we started to come together offensively, but not defensively. After the Florida game we won 13 of our next 14 games. Some of the teams we beat during that span were Oklahoma State by 18, Portland State, USC, and UCLA by 11. Then obviously we went on to win the Pac-10 regular season title. Great season so far, should be a good game with you guys.

because we lost to Wash St.

And we are a different team as well. The lineup played is completely different.

And finally, welcome to the board.

Heard it on the Jim Rome show. Thomas' dad was a big Lakers fan. He had a buddy who was a Pistons fan, and they made a bet-if the Pistons beat the Lakers in the NBA Finals, they had to name their next son after a player on the opposing team....and this was in 1989, when the Pistons beat the Lakers.

Edited to say: OOPS! Germans. OH well, maybe this will make up for it.

As a UDub fan I'll add a little bit more. Here's a youtube video of the last 6 minutes of UW against Florida (our 4th game of the season)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8uSamGL1w1I

Guards:
Isaiah Thomas (#2) makes his living going to the rack at will. Every team we have played has thought putting a longer man on him would stop him, but it hasn't. He's 5'8 and we've had someone 6'7 on him and he still got by whenever he wanted. I've never seen anyone get to the point whenever he wanted like him (and I'm someone who was at UW for the Nate Robinson/Brandon Roy years.)

Cougcenter (a Washington State blog, who hates UW more than any other team, had this to say about Isaiah):

"This guy is good. He is super quick, has great body control, and shoots just well enough from the outside to keep the defender honest. In the initial meeting, he started off by nailing several long jumpers in the first half. He eventually went cold from outside, but the defense still had to play up on him because the threat to shoot was there. This led to easy penetration, which as we know leads to help defense. Help defense leaves guys free to shoot wide-open threes and attack the boards.

I'm a firm believer in length being the cure all on the defensive end. Nothing beats a hand in the face of the offensive player when they are trying to shoot or pass. If we can bother Isaiah enough to force bad passes, that will give defenders more time to close out on shooters. Better yet, if we can just keep him out of the lane altogether, everyone can just stay home and those open looks and offensive rebounds can be minimized.

It is easier said than done, but we need a solid defensive effort from the defender on Isaiah Thomas. Shut down Isaiah and the rest of the team will struggle. "

Justin Dentmon (#5) is the player who will have the ball at the end of the game. He's one of two starting seniors, and our best FT and 3pt shooter. He's also good at slashing and creating shots

Venoy Overton (#1) is the best on ball defender I've seen in the pac 10 in the past few years. He was a starter for UW as a freshman last year, and now he's embraced his role as 6th man and defensive specialist. Since we run 4 guards he's able to be as aggressive as possible. Every team UW has played has complained about Overton.

Here are some videos about his defense: This one is made by a WSU fan complaining that Overton is 'dirty' http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=78k56YtNyPI
This is one against Texas A&M last year when Venoy was a freshman.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sZg8YR6cj3c&NR=1

Elston Turner (#31) is another freshman that plays at guard for us. He's another sharp shooter. He'll play about ten minutes. He's a good rebounder and an okay defender.

Smaller Forwards:

Quincy Pondexter (#20) is an enigma. He's clearly the best athlete on our team and most likely to play in the NBA. He has the skills to take over a game but he's also just as likely to disappear from the game. He's VERY emotional. Good midrange game and great rebounder for someone his size (6'6)

Justin Holiday (#22) is the older brother of super freshman at UCLA Jrue Holiday. Justin a defensive specialist who won't take a jump shot unless it's 100% wide open. Him and Darnell Gant rotate on the other teams best perimeter player. Holiday is 6'7 and long. His legs look like sticks but he's known as a great defender.

Big men:

Darnell Gant (#44), although our starting Center, usually guards the other teams best perimeter player. When we played Arizona St he did a great job on James Harden forcing him into bad shots. Usually we will sub him out for Justin Holiday. His jump shot extends out to about 18 feet, however he'll only take it if wide open. Also a very good rebounder (a common theme with this team)

Jon Brockman (#40): I'd be surprised if you haven't heard of him. He's amazing. Duke went after him hard coming out of highschool but he chose to stay home. He struggles against 7'0 defenders or guys with large wingspans. This is why he's not considered an NBA prospect although he was 2nd in Pac-10 player of the year. He has 58 career Double doubles and that leads all of basketball right now. His FT shooting is erratic and his jumper is hit or miss. He has lots of low post moves and is a relentless rebounder. Every team that plays UW talks about how much they like Brockman. Even our rivals say "I hate all huskies, except Brockman. He gets all the respect in the world". Here are a few videos for you to get to know him: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6DNrmaeMHww http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2VajusoP7-w

Matthew Bryan Amaning (#11) is a sophmore who is the heir apparent to Brockman. He's very inconsistent but he's a solid rebounder with good low post moves. He's also an adequate defender and a very good athlete. When he played this summer for London's under 19 team he scored 41 points against the Czech's (I believe).

I hope that helps, good luck you guys (but not too much!)

For your sake, he needs to be better because our point controlled Downey both times South Carolina played us.

Edited to add: Downey can shoot, Thomas cannot. I'm more worried about Washington killing us on the boards.

Thomas might have a little better body control. He's good at getting to the basket and has serious hops. It'll be a good matchup for Dee. Should definitely be fun to watch.

Thomas has absolutely amazing body control. Probably the best I have every seen. Here's a highlight video from the first few games of our season. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YimU9B6rCfo
He also had a streak during the season where he scored in double digits 17 straight games and has scored in double digits 28 of the 33 games this season, so he is consistent.

Yup, Elston Turner, Jr. He is a freshman this year and is the 9th guy off the bench. He will probably see about 10 minutes or so. His role is to come in and shoot 3's, so if you guys play a zone, you will see him more.
