how many yrs of basbeball u got under your belt?
you're nothing but a punk; one who wants to act like they are the only one who knows the "keys" to success.
baseball isnt a easy game to critique. there are many things going on in a game than most realize. WAY more! its not only chess match, but one with many opponents, current and future. so get over yourself, and enjoy winning. would u have rather we lost and saved holder?

It really is funny to me when a guy like rougedawg has a view that is disagreed upon by the vast majority, yet he thinks he is right and everyone else doesn't know baseball. Maybe he should take a step back from the keyboard, and re-evaluate himself.

it's not guaranteed we will be in a position where we need to use him again this weekend. we could be down 4+ the next two games. why not use to seal up a win. nothing is guaranteed.

Paul Manieri disagrees. He won one with basically FOUR pitchers. Not only that but have Bracewell, Girodo, Gentry, and we still can use Ross and yes, Holder if we have to. Not only that, but we also have Graveman going who normally eats up innings. Plus we have hardly used Holder- now is the time to start using him.

You've already been blasted, but I thought I would add my two cents. We could still use Bracewell for a save and rest Holder.

at least one day.

My 17ing point is...... We should have other pitchers on our team to finish out 6 outs with 4 run cushion, to save closer for a game he will be most beneficial to a win (1-2 run game in 8/9th inning).

How in the 17 do you people not understand what I'm saying? This is why I cannot stand this place during baseball season. 99% of people on here don't know **** about baseball strategy or the intricacies of the game.

I know plenty about baseball strategy -- you are simply going full retard right now about something that you are misremembering.

It wasn't a 4-run cushion. Quit saying it was. They cut it to 3 on the back to back doubles to lead off the 8th. They were literally one baserunner away from getting the tying run to the plate -- and they are a team with 7 players that could easily tie it with one good swing. It was an absolutely perfect time to bring in the closer and slam the door. Why bring in anyone else and risk a walk and trying run coming to the plate and THEN bring in Holder?

The fact that we extended it back to 4 in the bottom of the 8th is immaterial at that point -- you aren't going to pull the closer for someone else then--and Holder still only threw 30 pitches total. He will be available both tomorrow and Sunday if needed...

You're correct, all good teams burn their closer in the first game of a 3 game..

Watch out DS- he knows baseball.

Series when they have an 4 run 8th inning lead. I see that happen all the time. Maybe he will be able to pitch again Sunday, and he would be more likely to if he'd only come in the 9th.

My whole point is, if we do not have or do not trust any other pitchers in that situation, that can finish out the game by only allowing 3 runs (4 last night with run in 8th), then we have pretty much no shot to make any noise in regional, and zero chance to make CWS. Bringing in Holder right there shows that Cohen only has one go to guy that he can absolutely trust with a 3 run lead. That's troubling. Holder would be much more valuable in a close ballgame if needed. If he comes in for 9th to close out no biggie, but having no confidence in someone to bridge gap between starter and closer is not very promising.

I wasnt bashing the win, but to most of you on here, a win or 2 every weekend is good enough for you. If you want this team to win a regional and super regional, someone other than Holder is going to have to close out games like last night. And the only way they get/feel comfortable in that spot is being in actual games like last night. Holder cannot pitch every game in a regional.

Winning this game has nothing to do with our ability to win a regional. If you want to talk about hosting, maybe, but I like our chances in any regional this year even more than last year. We have plenty of depth... but the situation Holder came in was pretty dire... much more than "we should have not had to use him because Florida sucks." Florida is a pretty damn good hitting team, actually.

Why you are getting so worked up over the fact that we used Holder in a justifiable circumstance has everyone here scratching our heads... If we had been up 7+ runs, you have a point... but only up 3 in the 8th after 2 consecutive stand-up doubles to lead off the 8th inning is way more justifiable than you are making it out to be...

Had Gentry (Fr.), Cox (So.), Fitts (So.), Shelley (Fr.) or even Girodo (who else would you bring in) come in and blown that lead in a crucial save situation, you'd be screaming bloody murder about not bringing in Holder or Bracewell to seal the deal... and don't pretend you wouldn't.

If we dont have any pitchers that can get 6 outs with 4 runs to play with....

Then I have no problem with using Holder last night. But, according to all of you, we have a short list of pitchers that Cohen could have used. So why weren't they used? Why wasnt holder preserved for a tight 1 run ballgame (we seem to play a lot of 1 run games, especially in the past month)? Yes I know a W is better than a L, but bringing him in, in that situation, shows what confidence Cohen has in the remainder of his bullpen.

Precisely.

Not to mention- Holder's had some shaky outings this year. I'm more than okay putting him in a situation to have some success, even if it's extended a little.

Again- if you're not around to see him pitch every day, you have no idea how his arm will respond to going an extra inning. You go by what people can do and what your personnel allows, not some set-in-stone rules someone came up with.
