Uh, WAPT says another Jackson minor league baseball stadium in the works??

I'm usually on the "it can be feasible under the right conditions" crowd, but I'm not seeing how the Jackson metro can support two minor league baseball teams simultaneously. I love the proposed site. I wish Trustmark Park was in downtown Jacktown, but I don't see this one panning out.

ETA: the site they have picked out would make Farish Street District a really attractive restaurant/bar area. Corner of Hamilton & Mill.

That would be a disaster. No minor league team would come to Jackson with the Braves in Pearl. That guy needs to worry more about getting his stadium finished in Biloxi in time for his team to play in it next year. Cause it's looking more and more like they're gonna be playing in Huntsville again next year.

To make sure this happens...

They need to let the Jackson City Council take control of this situation. If the baseball team falls through, they can push for some more painted concrete fish to be placed on the street corners. ***

You might try WAPT.com. You'd find this there. It's a pretty poorly written article.

I'd take a good amphitheater at this point

Those cannot be much to build and maintain. I'm tired of going everywhere but Jackson for a decent concert.

2 Minor League Parks about 5 miles down the interstate from each other in the Metro area just sounds like a terrible idea. But if they built a nice one and it put the one in Pearl of of business I wouldn't complain.

There is ZERO chance this market can support two minor league baseball teams.

This is my favorite line:

"Bennett said he's working with the city, county and Jackson State University to see who will take the lead on funding for the project."

What problem do you have with the park in pearl. It's no secret that the Atlanta Braves have been disappointed in the crowds at Pearl, but to hope they go out of business is just crazy.

I think the new mayor may be the best Jackson has had since Kane Ditto. Not that that would take much, but it would be a step in the right direction.

What a great idea. Call them the Jackson Crack heads, sell plenty of beer and instead of putting up K for strike outs they can put up stats for number of car jackings, drug deals and homicides. Drawings will be for body chalk and police tape. Nice.

No way this happens. JSU can't even find funding for a football stadium and he thinks they will build a baseball park...

They wouldn't be supporting 2 teams. The Braves would move downtown and Trustmark would sit idle, just like Regions Field and the Hoover Met in Birmingham. At least the Hoover Met has other things going on, so Trustmark could maybe host the C-USA tournament again or something. Maybe MSU/Ole Miss/Southern or high schools would play there.

If this were the case, sucks for Pearl, but I'm all about a downtown ballpark. Living in Greenville SC spoiled me. And that downtown was prostitute central 15 years ago. Now it's a freakin gem. It's amazing what smart economic development can do.

What is the debt situation on the Pearl park? I'm guessing losing the Braves would hammer them?

Actually not a bad idea to get started on it early. How long is the current Trustmark lease for? 25 years? It's not all that unusual for minor league teams to move... A few years for planning and soon there's the CatVet Downtown Jackson Partners Stadium.

Just got back from San Pedro Sula, Honduras. If we wanna be named the Jackson Killaz, we need to up our game on the murders. Latin America could teach South Jacksonians a few new skillz. They pansy in comparison.

So the Atlanta Braves are leaving their ghetto park in Atlanta and moving to the suburbs, and they want to leave the suburbs here and move to the Jackson ghetto.
Where do you people come up with this stuff.

Atlanta is moving because Cobb County is giving them 500 Million Dollars. There is nothing wrong with the Ted other than staying there they get 0$'s. If the City of Atlanta Gave them 501 Million they'd suddenly fall back in love with the Ted.

They would have to kill Rob Jay before this could take place. As of last week he is still leading the charge for the $700,000,000.00 domed JSU football arena/JSU basketball arena/multiuse facility that he knows Jackson can afford and JSU deserves.

Man, WAPT messed up big time. Here's the real story-

http://msbusiness.com/blog/2014/07/28/baseball-stadium-farish-street-possible/

It's for Jackson State, not an MiLB team.

Wow. Yep. That's different. In that case, I'm a bit more excited at that possibility. But since JSU would be the largest stakeholder, I'm convinced that even if it was built, the end-product would be totally wrong for the surrounding area, as they completely fail to grasp feasibility, land use, and appropriateness when approaching public-private partnerships.

With the high school playoffs leaving Jackson, it just further increases the end of Memorial Stadium. It will be torn down and Jackson State will get their own stadium.

This is a pipe dream

It is preposterous that anyone would suggest another minor league team for Jackson. Damn that's dumb!

Here is what needs to happen:

1) Sell the Vet to UMC. They've been asking for the land for years. The hospital needs to expand. Mississippi needs the med school to expand. When I worked at UMC I had to park on the far side of the Vet, there are that many employees. UMC needs more room.

2) Tear down the Colosseum. Build a larger multi-purpose dome (big enough for a football field). Sell the naming rights (see if Nissan or Toyota are interested, or even Ingalls) Let JSU play there (for a fee of course), and fight like hell to get Jackson back in the rotation for the MHSAA football championships. Steal the MAIS championships from MC (won't be too hard, since JA and Prep are tired of Clinton).

Bid to ESPN to steal the Birmingham Bowl. Get a sponsor on board (preferably a MS company like CSPIRE). Since Birmingham can't even get a sponsor, it is in danger of losing the bowl. Especially if Jackson has a new dome. Legion Field is straight-up POS in a horrible part of town.

3) Have the stadium ready to convert to basketball in a flash and bid CUSA, SEC, and even Sun Belt to host conference tournament. I can personally attest to the fact that Ole Miss and MSU have been pressuring the league to get something in the state since it is just about the only state to never have anything (and has two founding members).

4. Renovate the hotels in the area, clear out the abandoned buildings, and build a new police precinct in the area. Put in new retail and restaurant. Let Mattiace handle it. He has the golden touch.

5. Bid to NFL teams to do training camp there. The Saints were a huge success for Millsaps. Imagine the Giants or a team with a Mississippi connection doing training camp in Jackson. Host an exhibition game.

6. Get on the phone with every single talent agency and book the place up with musicians, comedians, speakers, whatever will sell tickets. Get TSO on an annual basis, not periodic.

7. Sell beer.

8. Should have mentioned earlier, but get a football kickoff game. It won't be big SEC team vs. big ACC team at first, but start with like a top CUSA team and an AAC team. Something to generate some revenue. It doesn't have to be a homerun to start, just enough to bring some money in and build some credibility.

9. Host an early season invitational for NCAA basketball. Get some recognizable names, maybe some recent Cinderella teams.

10. Host a high school basketball tournament for the metro area schools. There are already a few scattered around the area on MLK Day. Take those over.

It can be done. It will be a large investment, but it could be done if the right people are behind it.

All good ideas. Problem is, how big do you want this dome to be? To host a bowl game, it'll need to seat at least 40K I'd think. Maybe more. And if your main target is basketball and the State Championships, you don't want it to swallow them.

That story makes much more sense and could definitely be feasible. It's a shame they're already talking about a new stadium when their current one was just build 8 year ago though.

60-65K range.

With basketball, it's all about variable seating. Playing basketball in football domes is quite common, but to get a college tournament, you have to show you can handle it with ease. Which is why it's mostly about getting the right people.

The JSU people calling for a dome are both right and wrong. They're right because it would do wonders for Jackson (if done properly, that cannot be overstated). They're wrong because it would have absolutely nothing to do with JSU being worth a dome.

Georgia's flag had the Battle Flag until 2001 and has had the Stars and Bars since 2003, but the league has no issue with putting the football championship there every year and basketball and gymnastics there regularly.

So, if the league gave that as a reason, then they'd have to backtrack pretty quickly.

The GA flag was change in 2001, the same year as the NCAA ban on postseason play at pre-determined sites. It's my understanding that we cannot host a planned event.

We could host a conference sponsored event, but not an NCAA one.

It's a pretty BS injunction, but that's a different discussion.

Technically, though, the ban expired in 2003, but the NCAA has been enforcing it de facto for South Carolina. Not sure if MS has even bid for an NCAA event that would be blocked.

Jackson State ain't about to build ****. Until the city gets a new venue that can facilitate football, Memorial Stadium is their home for a long time to come.
