solid post, I've tried to argue the same thing. I think people are just frustrated right now, they are in a mood to fight. even if most here have enough sense to know UK couldn't get Briles no matter what, they want to argue that Barnhart's presumed refusal to do it is meaningfully representative of the kind of mindset that has given us a century of football futility. There is about a 1% chance that Briles will ever coach at UK. Even if UK fires Stoops this year and Mitch is willing to consider Briles, it is much more likely that he would go somewhere else, say in Texas.
Why is it then that some fans become "experts" on the Baylor scandal and spend pages and pages defending him? The same thing happened with Petrino a few years ago where a number of UK fans took time to learn all of the facts of his Arkansas escapades and develop arguments about how they were really no big deal (I think those some people now argue the other side, but whatever). My question is what motivates people to become so emotionally defensive about people who have no relevance to UK and most likely never will?
Some people will literally say a winning football program is worth any shortcut. Those, I think, are a real minority. The more credible people on that side will say something like "Look, there is no such thing as winning the right way. That's a phrase for fools. Don't kid yourself, no one - no program - is squeaky clean. They are all dirty to some degree, it's just the nature of the sport. Insisting on remaining pure and refusing to even think about hiring a good coach with a little baggage is like taking a knife to a gun fight." I get that, I just think there are degrees involved. As I said yesterday, big difference between a jaywalker and a bank robber. Don't throw them all in the same pot......
