UL loses OC to Illinois

Why even have assistant coaches at UofL? Apparently the last WR coach didn't really coach or land any recruits and now the OC doesn't really coach. Why even have an OC if Petrino does EVERYTHING? My favorite part about that goober's last post is that he insinuates that Petrino is just so demanding and expects so much hard work and time from his assistants, that the ones that leave just can't take it.

Just curious...who are the "real" assistant coaches at UofL? You might magically muster up the courage to name one or two, but when they leave, I'm sure you'll say they didn't really do anything anyway, right? Whenever Grantham goes, you'll change your tune I'm sure. Laughable.

Hey wildcard and PE ....of all the staff, who are just figureheads ?

Can you tell us who actually are active coaches within the staff and who is just holding a position?

It would be nice to have some clarity.

OH and also clarify why so many cards were bitching and moaning about play calling last year....you know since McGee was technically not the O Cord and Petrino calls the plays.

Well this is ignorant - and I totally agree that it is BP's offense...but to say a TE coach/WR coach/any other position coach is more important than the OC&QB coach is just stupid...really, really stupid.

UKs defense is Stoops'...but DJ Eliot is more important than position coaches.

Hey guys, Nick Petrino was more important than McGee anyways....LMAO
I think you missed my point entirely. Let me try again,,,

HC Bobby Petrino is the de facto OC. He also can and does coach QBs. OC under CBP is not the usual OC position. If Elliot left tomorrow I think Stoop's would do a pretty good job taking over the defense (provided he could/would totally "trust" the offense to Gran and company.

I can't say I was happy about the younger Petrino's promotion from GA to a full position coach without paying his dues at a "lesser" program. I would have much preferred someone with more experience and, more importantly, a solid recruiting background.

Peace

No, I didn't miss the point at all. I even said it was BP's offense. But to say the guy getting paid more than every other offensive assistant and that has more responsibility than all of the rest is the least important is stupid. Just plain stupid.

McGee's role in his own words: “I think the word ‘coordinator’ means to actually coordinate the offense, meaning make sure all the dots are connected,” he said. “Make sure the offensive line, the tight ends, the quarterbacks, the running backs, the practice sessions run the same, that everybody has the same terminology, uses the same words, that it’s all coordinated."

Overseeing every position group as McGee did, is not the least important staff member. He is the most important next to BP himself.

You said it - it was stupid. I understand everything just fine.

You paid a pretty hefty price tag for that empty suit. You make him sound like a glorified QC assistant. You mean they guy did next to nothing and you paid him almost $1 mill per?

Not a "empty suit"...Wildcard pretty much describe his role very well...not much different at other places as well in college and the NFL...examples are in Green Bay with Mike McCarthy calling the plays and Edgar Bennett being the OC.

Nobody said McGee wasn't the OC...mainly said Petrino had a huge role in the gameplan-(as he always has even when his brother Paul Petrino was the OC the first go around) and that Petrino calls the plays during games.

But until his replacement is named UofL -(maybe a Chip Long/Paul Petrino/Dave Ragone) will just have to make due with Bob Petrino coaching the QB & Running his offense...I can live with that.

You hired two GA's to full time assistants. The DB coach has never been a full time assistant either. The next hire needs to have a strong recruiting background because the two replacements for Buckley and Thomas didn't replace their recruiting at all

By name only was he the OC according to UL fans....my question is "Why were so many cards upset with the play calling last year"....and as you said Petrino calls the plays during the game.

Why even have a staff? It's amazing the $$$$ wasted at UL on coaching staff. Think of the Stadium additions you all could make...and lower ticket prices for fans.

UL has to be the best place to be in the country. You can be employed there and don't have to do anything, they will pay you boatloads of money to just hold a position. They will also buy your hookers and they have no morals so you can lie, cheat, and commit crimes and they have no problem with it. They don't care what level of embarrassment you bring down on the university or the entire city because they have a saying, L1C4, and a gang symbol that apparently holds the University hostage.

I will agree that it doesn't really matter who the OC will be as far as playcalling, etc. because the O runs through Bobby. However, it does matter as far as recruiting goes. I don't see Paul Petrino coming back to ul since they will need a stud recruiter since they now have 2 former GAs recruiting.

As someone pointed out on twitter, how petty is it that Petrino issued a statement thanking McGee for his work as he exits but he nor UL said 1 word about Lamar Thomas

So the year before Petrino UL ranked #28 in total offense, Petrino's first year ranked #69 and 2nd year ranked #54...that is just DOMINATING [roll]

Boy that Petrino is a genius!

You can say that for a lot of college programs including Kentucky...from the 3rd OC in 3 years to losing one of the top recruiters in Ansley...

Concern losing McGee at this late date...somewhat but not freaking out...it is the nature of the business
Let's compare and contrast.

UK has had to replace several coaches lately. Dawson was fired; it is what it is. Brown left to become a head coach. Ansley left for a "lateral" move to go to Alabama. Not much you can do to keep Brown and Ansley; one leaves for a FBS head coaching job; the other leaves to go to Alabama. Stoops can only tip his hat to these two guys.

Louisville loses the receiver coach for a lateral job at UK. Louisville loses the OC for a lateral job at Illinois. Louisville loses a DB coach for a lateral job at Mississippi State. There's another one that I can't even remember, but, whatever.

I'd be a lot more concerned if UK is losing coaches in the same way that Louisville is. The only comparable situation is losing Chad Scott to North Carolina, but Scott still had good reason to leave; he lost his position here, so it wasn't a situation where he moved from his position here to a lateral move at UNC.

Something is rotten in Louisville, and I will call it out. Coaches do not like working for Honest Bob, and, given an opportunity to take a lateral position at another program, they tend to jump at the chance.

No...if you follow college football coaching movement not that out of the ordinary....just look around...but hey it gives ppl something to talk about..as for some coaches not like working for certain HC...Newsflash that normal as well..just look around the SEC or any other P5 league...it is what it is

Myself more interested on who will be coaching the QB in 2016 than worrying about 3 coaches leaving going into year 3....again if you actually look around the nation that is again normal...the only abnormal was the timing of McGee departure

BTW...Explain to me what is normal bout losing 3 OC In 3 straight years

We didn't lose 3 OC in three straight years, sir.

After 2014, we lost Brown. He upgraded. It happens.

After 2015, we lost Dawson. He got fired. It happens.

That's two.

I'd be more concerned, if we start losing coordinators for lateral jobs at Illinois.

Drew Barker is on his "3rd" OC in his College Career...not good continuity with your QB.

Guess what not real concerned...Louisville fans can afford to be that way as mentioned in this thread by being a perennial bowl team.

The new coaches whoever they are just need to do their job that they were or will be hired to do...period

What's it like supporting the trashiest institution in the country? Does it bother you or is it just the L1C4 way?

Louisville is not a perennial bowl team. Not even Alabama can lay claim to that; even Alabama, Ohio State, Oklahoma, and Notre Dame occasionally miss bowls and you better believe that the same can be said of Louisville. Surely you recall the Kragthorpe years, or the majority of years in the history of Louisville prior to him?

Let's not pretend that Louisville is something that it is not. Louisville is much like UC- an upjumped midmajor, with some illusory success and that's all. That's all there is to it. Another Boise St., if you will, though a typical Boise St. team would crush a typical Louisville team. If only Louisville played SEC teams on a weekly basis; if only you could see what we have to deal with on a weekly basis, then you'd get it.

FIFY You must be so proud to have a couple ethically bankrupt characters like Petrino and Pitino headlining your programs. Some people like to laud Turtleneck for his abilities as an AD, but the truth is that he presides over a renegade athletic program where anything goes and you're willing to pick up any discarded trash from other programs as long as they can contribute. UaVel athletics is a veritable **** stain on the state of Kentucky and collegiate athletics in general. Since 1998 only missed 3 years of Bowl...including 2 NYD Six Bowl win..That is 15 seasons of Bowl eligibility...if Kentucky had that type of success you would be proud....but the Wildcats haven't been to a Bowl game since 2010...also...last I checked Louisville is in a P5 League and the last time Louisville and Cincinnati is not-(but that could change this summer since the Big XII might expand and they are rumored to be near the top of their list)

The last time Louisville played Boise State...they beat them...that year BSU went into that Bowl Game in the Top 10 and undefeated. Also...would not advise a Kentucky fan throwing shade at Boise State Football...Boise State this Century is the better program then both Commonwealth Programs...

As long as you are in the same division as Clemson and FSU your bogus days of nyd bowl games are over and your win over bsu was bogus as their star rb did not play if I remember right...the fla game is the only impressive win

The record shows...Louisville beat a Undefeated Boise State team...Louisville has 3 NYD Six Trophies...you may call them "Bogus" or whatever...it is what it is...all I know is this...2012, 2013 and 2014 Finished in the Top 25 in All Rankings and Poll...more than likely will enter 2016 in the Preseason Top 25 in the AP & Coaches Poll and poised to have our 3rd straight year with a player going in the 1st Round of the NFL Draft with Sheldon Rankins.

Myself...done with this thread...most UofL fans are not having a "Chicken Little" issue with 3 Total Coaches leaving going into year 3 of the second Petrino era...that just the way we are.

Yes, the record is what it is, but all I am saying is that now you must exponentially improve with the position you are in now and I for you don't think you can get it done...I guess I'm saying the BE is now walking thru that door...we shall see unless maybe you can bring Hurtt back to recruit for you

McGee was making $854K at UofL, 19th highest paid assistant in the country. Money certainly not the issue here. He's had a bit of career with CBP and probably just wants the opportunity to add another coach to his resume.

Over the course of the year there were conflicting rumors about McGee; some said he was always very tight with CBP; others said he would make promises and not deliver with the players. I don't know. But at the end of the day, CBP calls the shots and I cannot imagine McGee left UofL (or UofL "let" him go) for $46K/yr. So that's why I think McGee took the job as a "career move".

I have absolutely no idea with whom UofL replaces him, but as far as OC goes, as long as CBP is there it probably doesn't make too much difference.

Peace

So do you think he left because he wanted out? Since the money was a lateral move.
