UM Closer says he is "Jonathan Papelbon without the theatrics"

I checked the first couple of pages so sorry if Germans...

Did anyone else catch this gem that the UM closer said this about himself. Well, he may be Papelbon without the theatrics, the 98mph fastball, the world series ring, the highest MLB contract ever signed by a closer, anyone want to contine???

I love that when he had to get a strikeout, he went to his slider to try to fool the batter. You never see Paps do that. Everyone in the stadium knows the heat is coming and he still throws it by the best hitters. I never saw this guy get above 91 today. All the announcers could talk about was how this one time at band camp, he threw it 94</p>

is an Ole Miss baseball player claiming to be classier than a former MSU baseball player.

Before the swarm decends, I'm not saying that Ole Miss baseball players aren't classy, but that's something that our sheep often claim about our baseball players.

That said I'm like Albert Pujols without the ability to hit for power, average, ability to play gold glove defense and instincts for the game.

To be fair, he did get the crap knocked out of him by a baseball.

their baseball history sucks donkey balls so much that he has to pattern himself after one of our former players because OM has none he can emulate...

i don't get your bitterness. if you were a closer for a college team, and someone asked you to compare yourself to a major leaguer, would you not give a similar answer? i doubt morgan was comparing his fastball, pro success, or bank account to papelbon's. morgan would probably be ahead, though, if you compared their college careers.

todd, i also don't think his "without the theatrics" comment was a dig on papelbon or his classiness. papelbon is intense, and you see it. if morgan is as intense, you certainly don't see it, and i think that's all he meant. but i guess it could be taken either way. </p>

That's what I thought too. Didn't Papelbon struggle at lot in college? I'm pretty sure he bounced from starter to reliever and never really settled. Had talent, but never really put it all together at MSU.

Honestly, when I think Papelbon, I think Cody Satterwhite. I think those two had similar college careers and similar stuff honestly in college.

for saves. He only started a couple of games because our staff wasn't that deep and he was one of our better pitchers.

He probably would be higher if he didn't have to share the closer role with Brandon Medders- now with the Giants, and Josh Wooten, among others.

His college career could have been more memorable if he wasn't on a Polk II team in 2003.

Papelbon was a closer for the <font color="#BA0000">Mississippi State Bulldogs</font>. He had a 9-6 record, 13 saves, and 2.90 ERA in his three years on the team in relief

Papelbon spent three seasons in Starkville and in his final year, in 2003, he went 6-2, 2.28, 7 saves and 54 strikeouts in just over 47 innings of work.

i honestly didn't remember any stats, just that he wasn't as dominant as he could/should have been, given his velocity. plus, you're exactly right about that 2003 team. i think morgan had 9 saves this year as a redshirt soph, and didn't pitch much last year.

hes added a consistent 4 mph to his stuff. Not to mention he has movement on his fastball now that was flatter than chers *** in college. Paps was a thrower in college who thought his 92 mph fastball would blow by everyone...it didnt.

They completely broke down his mechanics and taught the guy how to pitch in 6 months...amazing what a little coaching can do. They added a splitter and the rest is history. Paps **** is just nasty.

in pawtucket. or at least so goes the legend. and you're exactly right - he wasn't upper 90s in college. it was mid 90s at best. but he had nothing to go with it (or refused to try anything else). and flatter than cher's *** is probably the perfect way to describe the movement on the fastball - that's hilarious.

You are trying to cover for him making a stupid statement about himself. He could have gone with Trevor Hoffman, K-Rod, Rivera... but, no, he chose Paps because either he thinks he has the same stuff as him or he had a unhealthy obsession with someone who "struggled" in college.</p>

Paps' college career was a victim of our program not being what it should have been at state and we did have MUCH more talent then than we do now.</p>

It's sad that the two memories I have of Paps as a player at State are, obviously, the home run he gave up to UNC in the 2003 regional and a game winning home run he gave up to blow a 7/8 inning gem by Maholm at UGA the same year. You would think the guy who is on pace to be, with all due respect to Bailey Howell, the greatest professional athlete we've produced would have had more of an impact.

what's stupid is you trying to berate morgan for comparing himself (a fairly dominant closer in college) to papelbon (a dominant closer in the big leagues) when prompted by a question from espn. hell, espn probably asked "which red sox or yankees player would you compare yourself to?"

all we had to do was show some interest. it's ridiculous. oh well, i'm sure a legitimate closer wouldn't have made much of a difference for our team this year...
