I think this is mostly a misread of the actual dynamic at play. I don’t really think most coaches have some sort of borderline masochistic desire to put themselves under as much pressure as possible. I think they want to win first and foremost, and in the past have been mostly willing to take on the extra pressure in exchange for the clear advantages towards winning that the blue blood programs could offer.

An excellent Xs and Os coach doesn't suddenly forget that. And that's what Donovan is. What he did at Florida, during a time that the SEC was widely regarded as a bunch of scrubs that Kentucky could just beat up every year, was very impressive.
