You could be right. A pulled hammy would make sense. It's definitely not just a shoe, he's been gone too long. If they're testing him out in the hallway it's probably not a knee.

I had it happen on a hamstring, luckily not a knee. I was on a breakaway no one around me and it felt like I got shot in the leg. I hobbled and went down. Hamstring popped out of nowhere.

Dam that sounds and it looked like the non contact ACL tears we see a lot in the NFL. He took a mistep and dragged a foot a little then the shoe blew and put stress on that knee. Have to remember that's a lot of mass when you take a mistep. His dad went to the locker room so who knows. I'm sure he is done for the night. If that is an ACL tear done for the year. It just looked weird when it happened.
