I’m watching the Union game and they mention and show the student section where other schools brought students to join the Union student section. They mentioned Lebanon, Eastside, and Gate City. How often does this type of situation happen in Southwest Virginia?

I'll echo what Sixcat said and say that the Union football team is getting extra love due to the, literally, worldwide media attention concerning the coach situation.

They actually had to practice at undisclosed locations because of the hounding by reporters.

Helping your neighboring community through floods, tornadoes, droughts, hurricane Helene or crazy situations like this, you support them because you know they'll support you.

This is SWVA at its finest....

Our communities have always had to rally around one another. We're closer to 9 other state capitals than we are to Richmond. We're literally the land of the lost. Out of sight, out of mind for the rest of the state!

I don't know if there are any Glenvar folks on here anymore, but for anyone attending this game, please keep in mind that Union plays all football games at Bullitt Park, not at the HS. In the past we've had fans/students show up at the HS and were late to the game.

Parking inside the park is limited, but there is plenty on the streets outside the entrance. May just have to walk a bit. I would highly recommend getting there early. It will be packed.

Address is: 301 E 1st St N, Big Stone Gap, VA 24219

How are the accommodations for someone in a wheelchair? (Handicap Parking, seating, sightlines to see the game, etc) We're considering coming down for the game.

The stadium was constructed in the 1930's, so the overall accessibility is not the best, but the visitor bleachers were replaced in 2008, after a tornado, and they are fully ADA compliant. They're also only about 17 ft from the field. The only sightline issue would be people walking back and forth in front of you.

The home side is not accessible at all. They allow anyone in a wheelchair or scooter to go to the track at either corner of the field. As long as the action is on that end, it would be just fine. Anywhere else you would have a hard time seeing.

There are several designated handicap parking spots and even more that are accessible, BUT they fill up fast. We have a large older population in addition to many disabled, former coal miners. I would highly recommend getting there early.

Here's a video that will give you an idea of the parking and seating. You can also go to the fence since it is directly behind the endzone.
