Unofficial bullpen numbers....

...I quickly went through the schedule and this is what I came up with regarding our bullpen and starting pitching.

We finished with 25 wins and 29 losses. According to my quick run, our team led the opponent when a non-starter was pitching 31 times. Of those 31 bullpen leads, we held on to win 22 games. We also had at least two games that were tied when a member of our pen came in the game that we lost.

I have no idea how that stacks up to the rest of the NCAA, but it can't be very favorable. Those numbers also tell us that since the bullpen let us down 11 times, the in the other 18 losses, the bullpen never inherited a lead, meaning that our starting pitching put us in a hole before the bullpen could screw it up.

These numbers do not take into account the walkoffs we had. I think we had two.

In essence, it goes to reaffirm what we already know, that the vast majority of our pitching staff is awful. Unless we get some big time suprises, I only expect a slight improvement next year on the mound. Players like Routt are the exception to the rule. I'd be surprised if a bunch of freshmen can come in and do much better.

Have to also remember about the starting pitchers as pointed out by someone else,
How bad do tyler whitney and nick routt look because they HAD to stay in the game longer
than needed BECAUSE we had noone we could trust in the pen.

but 11 blown leads in a 56 game season means that you are blowing a lead approximately 1/5 of the time.

but they can be very inconsistant. Pomeranz was really good for us as a Freshman, but some of our best pitchers over the last few years had rough freshman years followed by good to very good careers.

lead ever and some another team might have blown the lead in the 9th. I guessing it's more like 1/3 they blew.

And kind of what I expect from most of the Fr. pitchers.

I'm sure they'll have their moments- both good and bad. But by the time they are So, they better be pretty consistent.
