Unpopular opinion RE: natn'l anthem

Watching the NBA finals starting up and instinctively reaching for the remote got me realizing - I really don't like the national anthem. I mean, I'm pretty patriotic, love the country, the soldiers, etc. The magical connection between song and patriotism just isn't there for me. It's just another song to me, one that's boring and I've heard a million times. I understand the historical events being described in the song, and appreciate them, but I don't need them to be sung to me.

The only exception to this was the version The Fray did at the college basketball championship game, because it was like a new song, which I wished more people did.

Am I on an island here?

I think the fray 17ed it completely up and should be banned from ever singing it again. Here is what I want every time. Start at 1:00.

possibly give him some options( songs) that he can submit in a Bill to Congress.

Otherwise shut up and just deal with it.

Or just run for public office, and make this your platform.

Change is always good.

What exactly do you get out of hearing the same song the same way before every single sporting event? Does it touch you some way each and every time, like hymns do for religious folks?

I'm not trying to be insulting in any way, just genuinely curious.

I don't know if its specific to me but some people's voice frequencies just drive me up a wall to where I can't listen to what they are saying because I wanna leave the room.

Maybe it's the repetitiveness of that song (and church songs) that when it's different it's just extremely annoying. You instinctively know when songs like that are off. I really think the repetitiveness is the key. Some can take variants and it's neurologically frustrating to others because they are so used to the same rhythm, pace, sound.

It just spices it up to where I could get into it. Although there's several posters who would and have passionately argued against it.

Its the Star Spangled Banner not Party Rock Anthem. You are supposed to reverently sing it not "get into it". It should be sung one way and one way only. Whitney Houston sang it correctly. It just so happened that she had the greatest voice on the planet and made it sound new.<div>

Now if the USA wants to change it to another song, that fits us today, that would be ok with me, but sing it, as it should be sung.

Not like it was adopted in1776. That would be a different story to me.

Like Ulysses said - get chill bumps every time I hear it sung like that. I don't care for more modern versions... not opposed to them, but just don't enjoy them as much.

it's the national anthem. its a song that represents our country and all its history and heritage.

or how about this, with each newly elected president, he could pick a new song like a hitter does in baseball when he comes to the plate. would that be better?

It's like he is that micro machines guy trying to just get thru the song.

The last 90 seconds of him singing are incredible.

And I don't get why it's the only song that's universally frowned upon when not covered the exact way it was written.

I know your 2nd sentence is sarcasm, but that does sound kind of awesome.

listen to the words.... he actually wrote what he was seeing during the War of 1812 with the Brits... The song talks about what our flag represents and the strength of our country. Maybe whenever the song is playing you should think about the troops overseas who are roughing it for 12-18 month deployments while you are at a sporting event (not trying to be an ***).. I get chill bumps every single time I hear that song.

Envision what Francis Scott Key was seeing that morning as he stepped out to see if the flag was still waving. Imagine that feeling.

I know that the song makes a lot of people feel super patriotic and love the troops extra, it just doesn't do it for me. I don't know why I should have more respect for them while that particular song is playing - it's not even about them, it's about a war 200 years ago (not trying to be an ***, but it's true). I love and respect the country and soldiers all the time, not just during the 2 minutes before a sporting event.

Again, not trying to change anyone's mind, just seeing if I'm the only one. I just don't feel any more patriotic when I hear the national anthem than I do when I see the national tree (Oak), national flower (Rose), or national folk dance (squaredance).

It's something I don't generally see a reason to discuss really, except that the idea came to me when the Heat/Thunder game came on.

On that same note, before you ask - I also don't go around shoving my lack of religious beliefs in anyone's face. I keep most opinions to myself unless asked point blank.

The American Revolutionary war is well over 200 years old.... I would venture to say it's still pretty relevant...

You seemed like one of the types that assumes all the non religious are pushy just because they don't agree with you. I'd apologize in case I'm wrong, but by this post, you're obviously a smug dick.

I'd rather not make this a heated religious discussion, but perhaps it's related? Maybe folks that relate well to hymnals and such also feel strongly about national anthems, and I'm just not that type? I really don't know.
