Who are the teams that will perform above expectations this year? On the other side which teams may disappoint?

Surprises could be Auburn, Parry McCluer in 1A. Gretna, Richlands in 2A.

Disappointments Glenvar (can only go down), Giles (can they reload or do they need a year for an overhaul),

Glenvar won't sneak up on anyone this year. They return the majority of their team that was responsible for the championship, they may just have a chance to repeat. Of course, they'll have the bullseye on them this year so it won't be easy.

Waynesboro in 3A

I think if things click for RE Lee they will be a sneaky team in 2A as well

They are just a simple team. Real smash mouth on defense. Pushed Wilson Memorial and Riverheads last year and I believe they return a lot.

Waynesboro in 3A came into playoffs as a 16 seed last year winning 2 games before barely losing to Western to advance to the semis. Returns most of their core

I agree with all opinions so far with just a couple of exceptions. I don't think Auburn or PM should surprise many people this year in 1A. If opposing coaches aren't taking these two teams seriously by now, they aren't paying attention. I do expect Giles and Wilson to slip this year and Glenvar's expectations may be higher than they can reach. It will be interesting to see how well the players respond to their new role as defending champions.

My dark horse teams are: Marion, Ridgeview, and Lee-Staunton. Lee-Staunton has a talented new coach that can take that program to the next level. Their games with Waynesboro, Wilson, Goochland, and Riverheads will be huge challenges but should show how well they are progressing. They are as likely to win all of those games as lose them, IMO.

Interested in watching them scrimmage Goochland.
