Upcoming smoking ban on campus?

I've heard from a reliable source that next year there will be a campus-wide smoking ban. I know other schools have done this (Bears, Florida, Georgia) but I don't really see how it can be enforced.

And even if they try to enforce it, how can they justify the action considering that they turn a blind eye to the supposed campus-wide alcohol ban, and in some cases even have a special day to stock lockers at DWS?

Sorry to mini hijack but I live the MSU Carolina Pride commercial that refers to a bartender at a tailgate. Guess they're making Shirley Temples ehh MSU Police.

They had a vote and it passed like a year ago, but it got really bad backlash so they just didn't do anything about it.

You're not allowed to use smokeless in classrooms or in any buildings on campus. Now it won't be allowed in dorm rooms (yeah right).

I think this ban is anywhere on campus, even outside ... and at tailgates. That's the way it is at UF and Georgia. Gonna be very, very hard to enforce ... especially when it's a legal activity.

Only in the seating area at DWS

There are smoking areas set up on the ramps. They're allegedly going to do away with those too ... but apparently will allow the booze to flow. I'd much rather sit next to someone who'd gone out for a smoke than some drunk that's acting like an idiot and subject to throwing up on you at any moment.

I'm sure the classroom/admin buildings have been smoke free for years. There are virtually everywhere.

It's been illegal here in restaurants for some time (permissible in bars, if it's only a bar, and no one under 21 allowed in). I was surprised not too long ago to find out that restaurants in Mississippi still had smoking areas.

Good, I don't smoke and don't want to smell it. They should also make a ban against people banging their cowbells on the metal bleachers. I don't bang mine on the bleachers and don't want to hear it.

If there is a smoker with deep pockets out there he could really have fun with this one. Go around with a camera on game day and take a bunch of pictures of the alcohol flowing, then file a suit of come kind. Isn't there something called a Writ of Mandamus (MSU Business law, 1959) you can get to make institutions do what they are supposed (e.g., enforce the law against drinking on campus?)

No ****. I think I smoked like a pack of cigarettes in the Grove for the Texas game.

Ah, so campus wide as in really all the campus. Yeah, you typed that the first time but I apparently decided to not read well.

Wow, that's harsh. It's a damn drill field...it's a few acres of open land. I loathe cigarettes and having to breathe n smoke from others as much as anyone, but damn that'd be a harsh rule.

Kind of like the dorms banned alcohol too back when I was there. Most of the rooms on my floor had a better stock of booze than the nightclubs in town...just hidden. It really was amazing what you could stash in the airvent above your sink.

Well said Mutt. It's completely understandable for many people to not like smoking. It's a very smelly, unhealthy, habit. I used to be a two pack a day smoker. If someone's smoking in the bathroom or the concession line or in a seat right next to you it's just rude and uncalled for. But how is the girl smoking near Stephen D. Lee's bust affecting anyone exiting the buildings around the drill field? My point is if the smoking section is tucked away underneath the stadium, and the smokers are being respectful with their habit, why would anyone go on campaign to take that away from them?

Also, the Cowbells against the bleachers is annoying, but it's more bothersome because it's just plain idiotic and defeats the purpose of the cowbell to begin with.

Exactly. Ban smoking inside public buildings and in the seats/concession lines. There's a legitimate reason for that because it affects other people. But there's absolutely no reason smokers shouldn't have an outside designated smoking area in the stadium or smoking should be banned in outside common areas around campus.

We live in a nanny state. Politicians and gov't entities are going to stick there nose where they shouldn't. This is a relatively harmless place for them to do it.

Ex-smokers are the worst. Haha. I agree with you ... as long as the smoker is courteous and uses the designated areas, then why try to stop the guy? And at tailgates or other outdoor places? Ridiculous.

I certainly agree with no smoking in buildings, in the stands, or even in crowded areas like the concession areas. But away from everybody? Sounds like a Mayor Bloomberg vendetta. UGa and Florida both do it, but I'll bet people still smoke outside, permitted or not.

Precisely

I know of at least one alum who is not going to renew his season tickets to any sport because of the impending ban. And I can assure you there will be others, and some of them may be contribution megabucks to the University for academics and sports.

I hope Scott is reading this.

And I think something like 30% of Mississippians smoke ... that's going to tick off a lot of people who are engaging in a legal activity.

I know the season ticket holder you are talking about.
I spent last weekend with him and his wife in Nashville.

When I went to a game in Lexington 3 or 4 years ago, I learned that they had made their campus smoke-free.
Do they not raise tobacco in Kentucky anymore?
If they do, I assume the UK ag department works for all farmers, including those in the tobacco trade.

Yep, you know the one.

Doesn't make sense, the totally outside part of it. But doesn't Mama Bloomberg have the same regulation in all of NYC? And California is similar too I think. Maybe they should just make tobacco illegal and get it over with.

But I still think MSU is going to have a hard time enforcing it when they turn a totally blind eye to all the alcohol that flows, not only at tailgates, but in the stadium too. And that is patently illegal.

My guess is enforcement will be pretty lax on game weekends. To the point of being nonexistent outside the stadium. And I'm sure he could find a place to get a quick smoke inside the stadium it he just can't stand to go 3 hours without a smoke.
