Just posted this in chat, but thought I would put it on the board as well. There is A problem with the Wilson negotiation. He wants to stay through the NC game, and I am told that might be a deal breaker for us.

Find someone who wants to recruit his *** off in Jan. and earn his potential 2.5 mil a year salary. Geez...This is getting frustrating.

Guess it would come down to how much time he's wiling to spend here and how quickly he could get a staff on non-OU guys out there recruiting. The good news is that if he can keep 75% of the class, including Russell, then the class is mostly settled without having to go get a lot of guys. If we can't get Petersen or Patterson, which looks like it's the case, I'd take Wilson even with him coaching the NC and try to work something out. In the end I think it would be good public relations that if OU does well on offense, they'll spend a good part of the broadcast talking about him coming to MSU which we be very, very positive press for us. Do the deal Byrne!

If we are the one to break the deal? I will gladly let him coach in the NC game if it means him vs. Derek Dooley.

if you are not committed to elevating your career to that degree then stay the rule 17 where you are..

I was disgusted with the way croomS handled it and we rule 17 deserve better this time...

We've already got a recruiting class for this year. If he can just keep those kids onboard, we're OK. Very different from Croom's first year when we had little and needed alot of work late in recruiting season (and didn't get it).
Wilson could easily coach there for three more weeks and still be contacting our kids and keeping them onboard. Heck, he could hire his staff and have them recruiting ahead of time as well.
If he's our guy, then we can work through that one little difference.

but unlike when Croom came here, the recruiting class is basically full and with good talent at that. If Greg agreed that he can do both, I would be pissed but I wouold get over it. The problem would be getting a staff together.

ETA: Vince beat me by 1 minute.

Either he wants the job on our terms or by God we will find an coach that wants the SEC HC job & 2.5 plus perks. We caved last time when LT had his hat in his hand & let CC stay with GB for weeks. I say hell no this time.

Exactly, you folks are missing the dead period, that starts the week before Christmas and goes through the Nat'l Championship game During this time the only contact the coach can make is phone contact. A lot of coaches do this, its not that uncommon, as long as he is here recruiting and making phone calls.

let him stay connected with OU to complete the NC game but he could still be announced and do some initial recruiting contacts here in the next couple of weeks. Heck, its a month until the NC game. In fact, I would think the fact that he's coaching in that game could gives us a LOT of extra PR toward recruiting. Its not like Croom where he wanted to stay through the end of the regular season and then EVERY dang playoff game hoping that GB would even just get to the SB (which of course they didn't). OU is already in the game and there are weeks involved with no game going on that he could spend some time here getting a feel for things. However, if he's just a co-No.1 or something with someone else that would be able to come full time now then you go the other direction. Only Byrne knows his own pecking order and where we stand with each.

....now MSU is forced to experiment with Wilson's temperment.

This is what sucks about hiring OC's or DC's or assistant coaches for head coaching jobs.

You are forced to experirment with how they react to being handed sudden power.

We went through that with Croom; he lingered in Green Bay when his hefty *** should have been in Starkville recruiting. That should have been the 1st red flag concerning the Croom hire.

I realize most HC's came out of the assistant coaching ranks. My point is they were all experiments too.

Gary Andersen, who was named the new head coach at Utah State recently, will pull double-duty of sorts. He's relinquishing the d-coordinator duties to the newly promoted d-coordinator, while he only works with the d-line and Utah State stuff.

USU's and Andersen's rationale is that the exposure will help. Couldn't hurt in this case.

In our case, if Wilson is the guy, tell Jay Norvell to get ready to have the asst. taken off his title and let Wilson concentrate on the fullbacks/tight ends when he isn't assembling his staff in Starkville and talking to ______ (insert high school player name here). (OU coaches bios found here)

I wouldn't be thrilled by it, but you never know what some of these high school kids will think.

AA - shout out to krut

he is going for a damn National Championship....that is quite a big recruiting tool for him in January...

Didnt seem to hurt Pellini at Nebraska this year as they are in the Gator Bowl....He can start building a staff while he is getting ready for the NC game..He is worth the wait- Crooms wasnt...he was a damn position coach that didnt do ****...big difference

Not to mention Wilson will know what to do when he gets here...it took Crooms 5 years to figure out some things

If he is in phone contact with the recruits and it is a dead period. What is wrong with the recruits watching their new coach, coaching in the National Champ game. If I was a recruit, I would be fired up about that. It would also make me pull against Florida or the SEC for the first time in a NC game.

This year we already have a recruiting class set for the most part. Wilson is going to be a much better known commodity to potential signees than Croom was. Think about it: when Croom was hired, how many of us were familiar with his work? On the other hand, if I was a guy looking at playing on the college level, I damn sure know who Oklahoma is. Maybe I don't know who Wilson is, but the phrase "OC at Oklahoma" is probably all I need to know, as opposed to "RB coach at Green Bay". Also, Greg Byrne is running this circus, not Lonnie Tinkle. I'm pretty sure LT wasn't contacting any recruits when he was hiring Croom. I'm sure that recruits are being reassured by GB that we're not going to hire a dud. How much recruiting would Wilson actually have to do? Probably only have to make a call or two to each recruit until after the MNC game. I say let the guy deal with his bowl game, then come on over.

On the other hand, if I'm Wilson, I would be thinking, "OK, if we beat the crap out of Florida and I'm there, I solidify my standing as an offensive genius. If Florida shuts us down, I drop a few notches. If I'm already at Mississippi State and Oklahoma scores 63 points, I'm still an offensive genius because they were still running the system I established. If I'm at Mississippi State and Oklahoma implodes offensively, everyone will shake their heads and say "Well, Wilson wasn't there to run the offense". Maybe I better take this deal and bolt."

You know Bradford's going to have a decent game - I mean he's only thrown under 300 yard twice this year, and at least 2 TDs every game. Oklahoma has scored at least 35 points in every game, and has a streak of 58 or more points in each of the last 6.

So if you consider the fact that him being the next coach at MS State would get at least some publicity during the NC game, it may actually help the last month of recruiting more than it would hurt.

Wilson ain't no Croom and to have NC coming in on recruiting could be good.

But yes I agree I would like him to come now.

Sarkisian is also staying through the Rose Bowl, and will pull double-duty. I think a competent coach can do both. That's why Croom was unable to.

He grew up in small town in NC, "you are what you were when you were 10 years old", he's loyal. He has a chance to win a NC and I think they have a good shot t it, their QB is a litle better than John Parker Wilson.

we have our basic class in place, just let him call the recruits. Plus Rocky is available for follow ups. This happens all the time, don't blow it. Please.

Agree 1,000%.

HOWEVER - We need to be allowed to make an announcement so recruits and the rest of the world have something solid to believe.

Having a national championship ring from this year would be a great recruiting tool especially for offensive recruits. If he happened to hang 50 or 60 on UF, he could point to having coached against SEC talent and being successful at it. Not that our talent would ever get close to Oklahoma but it does give some kind of measurement of possible success. Out of the possible candidates, not counting TT, I had Petersen, Patterson, Kelly (never had a chance), then Wilson. I think he would be my first choice of coordinators with Mullen a close second.

Like someone else said, Wilson runs his own show but Mullen has been with Meyer the whole time. I just wonder how much influence Meyer has on the offense. Wilson has done this everywhere he has been.

Plus, as others have said, our recruiting class is mostly finished. That's a far cry from 2003 where Jackie's staff quit recruiting well before the season ended. Wilson can get his staff lined out, recruit a little before the dead period, mostly shoring up recruiting, and then call recruits and tell them to watch the national title game. We get some free pub in recruiting from that game, which should be an offensive shootout, and end up with one of the top assistants in college football. It would be dumb to let the deal fall through over this. I would be disappointed in Byrne.

One thing about Cut. When he left UT to come to Ole Miss, the Rebs were in a bowl game. That's a big difference.

It seems there is a big difference in the timelines with Croom and Wilson since Croom was in the NFL. The Super Bowl is always 3 - 4 weeks after the BCS Championship. This year the dates are Jan 8 and Feb 1. That's 23 days. If Wilson was saying Feb 1 then I would say that's a deal breaker. It seems Jan 8 is much more manageable for us and would not impede recruiting negatively. Plus if he brings a ring to Vegas that's a big, big plus.
