Pretty well radio silence outside of Sean Callahan saying 75%-80% Diaco N this morning on KFAB.

I have to wonder if Diaco is playing us, Arkansas, and Wisconsin off of each other to drive his price up? It's just odd that it's been so quiet today.

Similar pattern with DW. Lots of speculation after Clouse broke the news, lots of pain about "he's not coming here, he's playing us" over the weekend, and then he showed up early the following week.

Not that its a guarantee he's coming here, but people's minds run rampant in the silence even if he is.

Not that it matters, but anybody know where his wife's roots are from. Being a fired coach has more latitude than one who has employment but sometimes a move to middle America might require consulting with the other half. Especially when kids are involved.

Wisconsin will not pony up the necessary money unless Alvarez changes his spots.

You do realize Wilcox was set to make $950K IN 2017 with a $100k retention bonus on top of that at the end of the year. Over $1M isnt ponying up?

We were told he made 500k. If he makes over a million at Wisconsin then I stand corrected.

No worries. He's going through the hiring process right now - background check, application, lawyer stuff, etc.. It all started happening around the same time of the week as Donte. Lots of stuff going on behind the scenes right now. This one is sped up some because of urgency of weekend.

Yep the wheels can only move so quickly.

Madison — New Wisconsin defensive coordinator Justin Wilcox is set to be paid $1.45 million over the next two seasons.

UW officials provided Wilcox's compensation package Thursday.

Wilcox's base salary is $300,000 each year. He will receive $200,000 in additional compensation in 2016 and $650,000 in additional compensation in 2017.

Wilcox, 39, also can receive a retention payment of $100,000 if he is still on the UW staff on Jan. 1, 2018.

So they are giving him $725,000 per year plus a bonus that he will never receive since he won't be there a year from now.

And if he takes the Cal job, he would have made $500,000 for 2016.

Not sure Diaco or anyone else is taking that job with that sort of backloaded compensation.

Alvarez didnt want him to be poached like Aranda to be a DC at another school. If they upped the ante for Wilcox they should be able to do the same for the new hire

Alvarez could have paid it all at the contract signing and his deal would still have been worth $1.45 million over 2 years or, $725,000 per.

I get what you are saying but it's a school friendly contract.

Nebraska government (and thus the University) has a funky law that the position has to be publicly advertised for(I believe) 3 days before a hire can be made, so count back the number of days since the position became open and advertised and you will probably get your announcement date. (Somebody in the know on the exact number of days feel free to correct).

Wilcox didnt have any leverage after being fired by USC so they back loaded it to prevent him from leaving after Yr 1. Just didnt anticipate him getting a P5 HC offer. $775K per year is still respectable, may not land a big name now with all the openings though.

A recently fired DC often has less leverage than a recently fired HC. Nonetheless if we are the spot that Diaco wants to land, then we will be the spot that he wants to land.

Like @Tuco Salamanca said, that's school friendly, which is what you're missing in this discussion. He didn't make $775K, he was paid $500K in 2016. Wisconsin had no financial risk in this contract.

I'm pretty sure you are correct on the 3 day thing, but not certain.

I find the timing of the press release that Banker would not be retained (around 5:58 pm on Wednesday the 11th) interesting. It was released basically when local sports talk radio shows would be going off the air. Maybe it was posted earlier on Wednesday on their web page? I've checked both the University and State job sites, and can't find it listed.

I'm not missing anything, yes he made $500K in 2016, but he was going to be paid over $1M this year. Another poster converted it to a per year average. Of course it is school friendly, but that doesnt change the fact that they were going to pay him this year.

Diaco would have to see the potential to become HC at NU in a few years if he does a great job as DC.

Yes. He went 11-26 at UCONN.
Some people are great coordinators, not great head coaches.
I really don't understand why you'd go from being the DC at Notre Dame to being the anything at UConn. There are plenty of HC gigs out there that are step down from a good assistant job...

If I have the timing right, UCONN was in the Big East still, and that program was doing very well at the time, to the point of playing in the Fiesta Bowl in 2011.

Edsall had that program pretty much topped out. But Paul Pasqualoni cratered the program before Diaco took over. He couldnt move the needle. Gonna be hard to build a decent program in Storrs. Edsall might make it work a second time.

Here we go. Let's talk about a coach who was a complete disaster as a head coach at UConn becoming our head coach in a few years.

Or he may make a whole lot of money before he retires. Petrino has proven that you can go back (Louisville). So hell who knows, maybe Edsall has the magic formula for success at UConn
