Saban has done well at Bama and LSU, no doubt. But when he was at Michigan State they were pretty mediocre. Urban turned Utah into a BCS bowl winner.

Per the never to be doubted Wiki.....they had gone five years without a bowl, then went to three straight under Saban, skipped a year when they were 6-6, then in year five went 9-2 his last year there, 10-2 if you count the bowl game he didn't coach. Perhaps they were set to take the next step in the famous Saban "process" when he bolted to LSU.

Not to say Meyer hasn't done great things. BG won 2 games the year before he got there. Utah was decent but not what they are now.

I think what both of them have in common is they walked into good situations with unlimited resources. Zook and Shula were obviously not great coaches but each of them had acquired enough talent for another coach to win championships with it.

I hate Saban and Bama but I don't see how they are anything other than #1 going into next year and it will take a man sized effort to beat them.

You have to think he would have stayed if they had made some outrageous offer. Nobody knew he was this generation's Bear Bryant yet, but they haven't come close to repeating the success he had.

Seems like Saban has a 3-4 year football program-building plan, and executes it, almost regardless of players. Call me crazy, but I get the feeling that if Ingram or McElroy had gotten hurt, whoever went in next would have had pretty much the same result. I don't think you can say the same about UF, at least this year.

It makes me think SaBear builds the whole team on a very solid foundation, a little better than Spurban (since we're going in that nickname direction).

is pretty high. Saban wins big because he recruits and coaches well. He can take average teams and make them good. Then he takes good teams and makes them great. The D is always the key for him though.
