USC Offense

I have to believe that HCMR wants to run something similar to what USC does, as displayed in the Rose Bowl. Granted, Sam Darnold played an absolute gem of a game for a redshirt freshman in a crazy atmosphere, but how can you look at their offense and not envision Riley and Langsdorf drawing up a blueprint like that? And to all the "run the ball" homers (I can be one of them sometimes too), USC still used a balanced attack on the ground with their RB.

As long as we can recruit the players and athletes needed for running that offense (already have 3 solid pro-style QBs in waiting), count me in as stoked.

USC runs what they do because they can find the athletes to run it walking down the street from their football office. Take Joseph Lewis and Greg Johnson for example, if Lincoln Southeast produced kids like Lewis and Johnson every single year Nebraska would be pretty dang explosive on offense as well. The fact of the matter though is they don't produce talent like that in Nebraska HS Football so we must go outside the state to recruit kids like that. A kid like Lewis who grew up in LA will 9 times out of 10 stay home and attend USC/UCLA/Stanford/Cal....So we are constantly fighting an uphill battle as a program and taking the leftovers and scraps that schools like USC don't want or don't have room for (in MOST cases) There are always a few exceptions. Watching Nebraska from a far, as I did for most of my life, I saw a dominant program that played to their strengths. Those strengths were neutralizing speed with power, hence the traditional power running game they have always had when Nebraska is successful. (See 96 Fiesta Bowl as the primary example) it was when Nebraska moved away from that thought process under BC that Nebraska lost their identity as a program and have been floundering in mediocrity ever since.

Now that Nebraska has moved away from that, it is time we throw the kitchen sink at top level akill players and pray we steal 1 or 2 and then hope to god they aren't busts. It's the only way we can be successful as a program! Nebraska now has their man at the helm and in Riley we trust!!!! He is going to be the one to steal one of those elite game changing skill players and put Nebraska back on the map for years to come.

I don't think top level skill players are our problem. Give them an offensive line and a QB and they may surprise us..

Totally understand your talent argument for kids not in our radius or region. I usually make that argument too. And much to your other point, I believe Riley is one of the only ones who will be able to snatch that top talent away from other regions, specifically southern California. I hope he can hit the southeast and Florida a little better in the next few years. It looks like we are trying for a couple talented defensive recruits in the 2017 class and even more so getting ahead for the 2018 class. Hopefully Riley can run the system he wants and, most importantly, is comfortable running.

I agree. The studliness of Sam Darnold made up for a lot of USC deficiencies. He was very, very good. I hope all of our next 3 QBs can play like this.

Oh he is trying in the southeast but that will never happen. Mike has never really had success there and likely never will. The kids we are "targeting" right now we have no shot at. Mike is SoCal or bust and I'm feeling this Calabraska movement!!!!
