for the same reason I respect South Panola for scheduling Apopka, MUS and those tough opponents. Playing good programs strengthens your program and makes for very exciting football when it is an in-state game.

I figure by next year when Mullen gets it into gear, it will be a helluva contest. Mullen and Fedora are pretty decent friends as I understand it. Fedora (he was Zook's offensive coordinator) did a lot to get Tebow to stay with the Florida committment after Meyer took over. Fedora and Tebow stay in touch. See linkage.

You guys get way too worked up about playing USM. It's a game that will be played in a packed house, will draw a ton of local interest, and it's a game we should win. You guys act like they are Southern Cal or something. Even in some of our worst years, we still beat USM and rarely do they beat us for a recruit. It's a much better game than say MTSU.

Yes. I was there for the MSU game after USM had just beaten FSU. They were ranked and feeling very good about themselves. We beat them on their home field in front of a sold out stadium and we did the tomahawk chop. It was a fun game.

and it is a very good criteria. If it meets it, it's a possibility..if it doesn't, it won't happen. It doesn't matter if Coach Mullen and Fedora are on speaking terms if it doesn't meet Byrne's criteria....end of story.

Jackie did not like playing them, because they had lower student entry requirements.

Bad deal!

Absolutely nothing to gain!

Playing them and even losing to them twice is not going to destroy our program. Crooms and Tinkle did a good enough job of that.

The game will be competitive every year. It's much more compelling than several of our other OOC opponents. It's not much of a drive to travel there. And, whether you admit it or not, we compete with USM for recruits. Beating them helps, period. We will lose a few of these games, but I think people's concerns for hurting recruiting are overblown. Opposition to this game by State fans comes across as the same type arrogance that so many other schools use to discriminate against State. I'm all for playing a competitive in-state series, period. Byrne is doing what he does, and that's making good business and marketing decisions.

I wonder if it's home-and-home, two-for-one, a home-and-home with a neutral site game in New Orleans (okay, I'm joking but there are a lot of people who want a fun game in New Orleans), or even the three-for-one that Veazey alluded to Friday.

It's supposedly a 2-1 deal, maybe with some future scheduling, but probably not an every-year deal like in the past. The same guy with connections who told me that Bower was gone the night before it happened told me this one was coming, probably this week.

You're right that it's a great game, in and of itself, but it hurts our program by putting an in-state Conference USA school on equal par with us, an SEC school. Beyond it being a great game and firiing up the state, what are the benefits of playing them for us? I can't think of any.

they are the worst fans in the football world...
Won't attend games...USM deserves better...
But if they beat us...will 17"n come out of the woodwork...like 17"n cockroaches.

Not worth it! We have enough on our plate!

USM must really want to play MSU. I'd have thought that it would be home-and-home.

We play other CUSA teams. How is that "putting them on par with us?" We played Jackson State. I don't see the difference. The benefits are all outlined in my first post. The people who don't want this game just enjoy looking down at Southern. Just like so many programs' fans look down on us. I don't like that way of thinking. I think it's petty and not solid reasoning. I hate Southern Miss. They are a glorified high school. But they are a competitive team in our state and the game is appealing for all the reasons I said before.

equal or better than you will most likely improve you as compared with playing a weaker or lesser opponent.

Also, making decisions based on a fear of losing instead of facing challenges and striving to win is a life killer and is no way to build or run a championship program - or live a life for that matter.

"And, whether you admit it or not, we compete with USM for recruits. Beating them helps, period."

We go head to head with them and we win nearly every true battle b/c USM we are a bigger program in the best conference in the land. They have nothing they can really use against us in recruiting.

Lose to them and they do.

Recruiting is the very reason we shouldn't play them.

All that aside, I think the games will be a blast.

If true. The 2 for 1 is even more sweet. I've come full circle on this. There is no reason not to play them. Oh, all the Csuckers, meaning spd, cowpower, drebin, et al, don't bother replying. Anyone one who makes special olympics 34 look smart, need not reply.
