USM to hold spring scrimmages across the state...

I think this is a pretty good PR move on their part. Their Jackson area scrimmage will be at Madison Central. I would like to see Miss State do something like this. Most of the fan base would like to see a scrimmage, but at the same time isn't willing to travel to Starkville just to do so. I guess the down side would be that it could decrease attendance at the spring game. Thoughts?

I think exposure to local area high schools and coaches would increase and that's probably more important than the spring game attendance.

I dont know what USM does, but both UM and MSU have used their spring games coupled with a home baseball series as a spring home coming. I really dont think people will mind coming to Starkville to see the spring game, if they really want to see spring football.

Im assuming they can have as many scrimmages as they want.

Considering USM has probably 500 people at their spring game, it makes sense to branch out and go across the state and attract attention.

Just a really good idea that Im positive Ole miss and MSU will follow.

Only reason Ole miss won't is if Boone thinks its too expensive, and I doubt MSU won't do this.

some how. If the fans won't come to them then they will come to the fans. May be they should start playing their regular season games on Friday nights in Jackson. They can't seem to get folks to Hattiesburg on Saturday so what do they have to loose?

Just joking!

While on the surface this appears to be a good idea, I think it would actually work contrary to the new marketing focus of the Athletic Department of promoting Super Bulldog Weekend and generating excitement and anticipation for the spring game. This may work well for Southern, and would definitely be a good outreach tool it would counter our other efforts which we are heavily invested in - think new sponsorship. Regions would no way touch SBW if there were efforts ongoing that might diminish attendance on campus.

Some people aren't very happy about it. I personally don't really care.

Double Decker weekend is more a SBW-type atmosphere anyway.

how about if you made it really interesting by having a "real" and meaningful scrimmage.
MSU vs ole miss as the year end Spring Game. Alternate it between schools, Egg Bowl at MSU this year, Spring Game at ole miss and alternate or whoever wins the Egg Bowl gets to host the Spring Egg Bowl.
OR, have usm, ole miss and MSU in a round robin Spring event in Jackson.
All 3 schools play 1 quarter against each other.
That event may not be able to be held in Jackson......not enough seats in the stadium

but I'd like to see Division I teams scrimmage against Division II/III/NAIA teams in the Spring.

Ole Miss could play Delta State
USM could play Belhaven
MSU could play Millsaps
JSU could play Mississippi College
Alcorn and Valley could cease to exist like they should.

Great fun.

I don't like that idea at all. The Egg Bowl needs to be played once a year and once a year only. However, I think it could be beneficial to pay some lower tier school to come to Starkville for a live scrimmage. Although I'm not sure that is allowed through NCAA rules.

We never need to play there again. That place is out of date and in a very sketchy area. If they improved the stadium and the area around it then I would not mind going there to watch the egg bowl.

The SEC does not permit practices off campus. CUSA does. It is legal, just no contact with potential recruits. USM had 11,000 at last years Spring game. Expectations are to double that this year. We shall see. There is a baseball game in the afternoon with the spring game at night under the lights. Fedora definitely thinks outside of the box.

I'm sure it's just coincidence that the Jackson area football field they chose to scrimmage on was Madison Central. USM's coaches may not actually speak to any recruits there, but just by having it on MC's campus, there will be some contact. Smart move on USM's part. </p>
