There has to be something else to this situation. I just don't see why UT could not get a big or medium name coach.

Go get a young guy, go through a few tough times, and see if you can rebuild. They need a young guy that can take a few on the chin for a few years and try and repiece everything together. An experienced mid level or higher coach won't want to put that mess together. But a young coach would, especially if it leads to a bigger job in the future. Not a great hire right now, but if he pulls a Chizik and brings in a good staff, it could be a pretty decent hire.

Hamilton in a box having to pay out $ to existing staff to be let go. But I believe there's more here. That looming NCAA hammer is apparently scaring away pretty much everybody.

Did nobody want this job. If this is true I just do not get it. I cannot imagine that they would not get enough cash to hire a big name coach out there.

about to be in Knoxville today. A very poor hire that will ultimately cost their AD his job, if that hasn't started already.....

that, don't see why it makes much difference to State fans. We don't play them that often, and whoever they hire is not a direct threat to our recruiting.

I predict both Dooley and the UT athletic director will be fired within 2 years.

I'm shocked that UT didn't just give a more recognizable coach a godfather offer, but I'm not shocked that people aren't dying to go to UT. Yes, they have resources and tradition, but if you're already an established coach, do you really want a job where the fans have NC expectations but you're having to recruit to easter TN??? If you just want to pad a cushy retirement, jump on it. But if you're already comfortable and worried about your long term legacy, why take a job when there is a 98% chance you will be fired from it?

We will play them eventually, so it matters. Not as much as a SEC West hire would, I agree.

All I heard now matter what baby Kiffen did they were going straight to the top. Now he leaves and they did not really like him. Up until now money did not matter and they were not going to play around with this hire. Next thing you know you hear that they are talking to Cutcliffe. Now they get a guy that most State fans did not want here last year. I would be more excited coming off our 5-7 season than where they stand now.

No, it is a bad hire. Now, he may turn out to be a good coach, and more power to him if he pulls that off but there is no way a school like Tennessee can spin this into being a good hire.

Not saying that Lane Kiffin was any better, but still. Sheesh.

seem to be as intense as some of the other schools we recruit against for players, but I ain't a real recruiting geek either, following it 24 hours a day. I think maybe the rap some people have against Derek Dooley is because they "think" he didn't earn his way in the coaching business, and that he was given some things because of his father. His lineage probably didn't hurt him, but it didn't guarantee him anything either. Saban was also one of his mentors...that's all I'm saying.

Folks said the same thing about Chizik last year. Almost verbatim. They were wrong, too. Now, I'm not suggesting Dooley will turn out to be a good coach, but it's best not to speak in absolutes.

Chizik didn't do as bad as everyone thought this year at Auburn. Now I'm not overly impressed, but it's all speculation until he coaches them.
