Agree. We're definitely not a Top 20 team right now. We have the potential to be that good if we can figure out our rotation and fix a few things that are fixable.
As someone else said, we're still relatively young, with only one senior on the team, and the majority of our players are primarily in their first or second year of real D-1 time.
We should get better. Will we fully reach our potential this year? I don't know, but we should be a tourney team either way. If we're playing like this for the entire SEC season, we'll struggle some, but at the same time, we should be playing better by the middle of SEC play.
ETA: The good news is we haven't taken any bad losses yet while trying to get the team chemistry down. Regardless of how we won, they still count as wins for RPI and for the selection committee. Right now we've really got 3 groups of players that are trying to come together and form roles. You have Gaskins, Warren, and Polynice who played significant time in 07-08 together, but didn't really play in 08-09 (Warren only played the first 11 games). You have White, Henry, Holloway, and Cranston that played in 08-09 without the previous 3. Then you add Buckner and Riley as incoming players that haven't played with either group. Zach Graham is the only player we have that's played with two of those groups in both 07-08 and 08-09. I think a lot of our issues right now are chemistry related. White and Warren in particular have both been THE guy on separate teams. Now they have to come together in the same starting line up. One of them is going to have to be the No. 2 guy. It's a good problem to have, but we're still working out the kinks of settling on a rotation and having those players understand what the others are doing.
When you look back at our team that lost to Valpo as a 4 seed, they basically had the same starting line up for 3 straight years with similar role players coming off the bench. That's why they were so good. This year's team is more talented than that one, but we don't have the chemistry, so we likely won't have that same level of seed.
