You regulars may remember that my wife and I are going to celebrate 50 years of marriage later this year with a trip to see a Barrow High School Whalers football game. I have been in touch with head coach Battle and the school Principal. Coach Battle provided me with their home game dates, and I have decided on Sept 16. The Kodiak Bears come to town that day. I’m excited. I’ve never watched a football game from the seat of a snowmobile before.

I’m entertaining suggestions on what gifts I may take and present from the Dinwiddie Community, the Generals, from the VirginiaPreps faithful, and the VHSL. I’ve asked Coach Battle to think about something that I can bring to his players that they may not be able to get up there. So help me come up with something appropriate.

Something Dinwiddie High School related or from the Dinwiddie community. See if both schools can become sister schools.
That is what I’m thinking. A jersey or signed ball will be nice. But something that they can eat will really appreciated. One thing that I had in mind was peanuts and chocolate covered peanuts. I doubt that that is something they have available up there.

A DVD of "30 Days of Night". It's set in Barrow, Alaska during the time of winter where Barrow has no sun for 30 days. Definitely some Route 11 Potato Chips. I know everything up that way is mucho expensive because it's so isolated.
Oh good grief. I thought 30 days of night might be an informative documentary. When I started reading the intro it says, “when plunged into night, the villagers are attacked by blood thirsty vampires!” That is all that I needed to hear.

I thought about ham too, Mike. I’ll have to be sure they don't have any restrictive laws. But I can’t believe that cured hams could be a threat.
I‘ll have to talk with the coach to be sure that cured ham isn’t something so strange that it may not be enjoyed. For example, if they sent me a box of premium whale blubber, I don’t think I could handle that, as well meaning as it would be.

Anything fresh, I’m sure is greatly appreciated, but it would be difficult for me to get anything like that there in a timely fashion.

I’m going to look into sending some fresh fruit ahead of my trip. It looks like it takes about about a week to get a package there via UPS Ground. I would think, packaged properly, apples and oranges should ship fairly well.
Coach Battle said chips would be popular. I just worry about them getting broken up so bad.

LOL, if eggs are around $5 dozen here, can you imagine how much they are up there?

I think if you were open to it you might get a lot of schools wanting to send something up to Alaska! Can’t help but think a picture of a dinwiddie helmet or hat on that field would be neat! Enjoy the trip this fall

Thank you. Yes sir, I’m open to carrying almost anything any school would like to send. I think it would mean something to those boys to know that they have friends and followers down here that are pulling for them.

On a little different note, a girl we watched grow up here in Dinwiddie, married a young farmer from out in Smyth County a few years back. They are trying to buy a farm in Ceres. That sure looks like a wonderful place to raise a family. Does anyone have any first had knowledge of that area?

Another off topic story. I had two of my electricians working out in Dayton, not to far from Rockingham on Monday. I was a little surprised to learn how prominent the Mennonite population is in that area. I assume they are predominantly Mennonite? Maybe includes a smaller population of true Amish?
Is anyone familiar with that area? Gunz, isn’t this near your stomping grounds?

I went to JMU and can say that there is a HUGE Mennonite community out there. Eastern Mennonite University is out that way as well. I remember a young basketball stud from Manassas Park back in the 80's named Eugene Baltimore played for them, I think he still lives around the Winchester area if I'm not mistaken. Eugene was a helluva player and fun to watch. About as short as Mugsy Bogues.

Since I used to work for the Postal Service, I know Ceres, Va's zip code is 24318. And that concludes my knowledge of Ceres.

Mike, you should be glad you are no longer associated with the USPS. They are an embarrassment for the most part. Although we have a great carrier and a really good postmaster. But honestly, they are victims as much as we are. They can’t deliver what is not brought to them from that black hole called the Sandston Mail Processing Center.

All Roanoke/Lynchburg mail goes to Greensboro P&DC for processing. (Same story as you talk about with Sandston)

When your one and only job is to “process mail”, how can you screw it up as bad as they do? I’ll answer my own question, accountability. Or rather the lack there of.

I don't want to get too deep in the weeds on this, but the word I'd use is sabotage.
