this apparently happened at a Panera Bread not too far from where I live. I found out this weekend one of the cops killed was one of the Engineers I work with' husband. Damn shame.

Are you trying to say that one of the cops killed was the husband of one of the engineers you work with? [winking]

Tragic story but I don't remember any other President catching the type of heat that BO has for this type of "oversight" and I don't remember any other President publicly recognizing every (or even some) police officer killed in the line of duty either. It just seems political to me.

You are probably correct. HOWEVER....I also don't remember any other President recognizing some thug that was killed by a police officer doing his or her job.

It is a tragic story and it does ooze stupidly of political BS.

Here is the letter:

” Dear President Obama:

In case you haven’t heard, eight American police officers over the past eight days have been killed in the line of duty. Two of these police officers were Harford County Sheriff’s Deputies that were gunned down at a Panera Restaurant just 50 miles from where you live. I’ve watched and listened intently for words of encouragement and sorrow to come from you, but haven’t heard or seen anything.

Conversely, just two weeks ago my governor, Larry Hogan, spent the better part of a week placing a call each day to one of my deputies that was involved in a severe traffic collision in Carroll County. He wasn’t satisfied with speaking to me in order to send his prayers and regards; he called every day after the collision until he spoke with my deputy’s wife. Governor Hogan also drove to Harford County the day after two deputies were slain to meet Sheriff Gahler and the men & women of his office to grieve with them. The governor is in the middle of the 2016 Legislative Session and is pretty busy, yet found time to call, visit and pay his respects to me & my deputy, and the men & women of the Harford County Sheriff’s Office.

I understand that you are a busy man and are being pulled in multiple directions every day of the week. But, when my president doesn’t take the time to openly recognize the sacrifices that brave men & women of law enforcement make each day to keep domestic peace, I’m disappointed! I suspect that if these same deputies walked in to a restaurant, and without provocation shot and killed an innocent man, you and your staff would quickly whisk their family away to Washington for a future speech to make an example of police officers nationwide.

For me Mr. President, it has nothing to do with Republican or Democrat; black or white, male or female; but, it has everything to do with leading or following. I’m not shocked that you haven’t openly reached out or acknowledged publically the recent rash of deaths in law enforcement, but I’m tremendously disappointed!

Mr. President, your silence about these events SPEAKS VOLUMES!!!!

PS: I’ll be standing outside in the cold next week with my deputies for the funerals of the Harford Co deputies; I’ll save you a spot next to me!

You tell me......you are the one that initially used it ("I don't remember any other President publicly recognizing").
In my sentence it means honoring. What does it mean in yours and what are you talking about in your post? Who is this thug that you are referring to?

Wonder if he would have written the same letter if it was a republican president?

The letter says that it's not political but of course it is. The letter writer thinks that the President doesn't like police officers.

FWIW, for all of you that decide to write letters to the POTUS or your elected representatives, no matter how much you dislike the person, the tone of the letter in this thread will get you absolutely nowhere. It's kind of a litmus test for members of Congress. If there is any hint of disrespect, it gets filed for future reference and no response.

Mine meant bringing attention to someone in a public way. I think you know what thug I am talking about.

Why the game playing? Who are you talking about?

Since you already were smart enough to bring up Ferguson you know the answer. But just in case, it was the thug who the police officer shot when he was attacked by the thug. I don't know the thugs name.

It's hard to criticize when you don't know what you're talking about (by your own admission). If you're talking about Michael Brown, then if the President mentioned his name (bringing attention to someone in a public way) then the President is wrong? for mentioning someone's name? The President may be open to criticism in Ferguson but so far you don't seem to be able to clearly state what it is that the President did wrong in that instance. I'm not going to go back and read the history of that case but if the President criticized the cops early on in that case then he was clearly wrong as was proven when the grand jury failed to bring charges against the policeman involved.

The very fact that this sheriff went public with this shows what his real intentions were.

My wife's best friend lives in that neck of the woods. She goes by that Panera daily. Her husband is a minister in the county, it's been hit pretty hard by the shootings.

I don't know who this Sheriff from Carroll County is, but he sure seems to be getting ready to run for something by playing on a nearby tragedy for political points.

The following is a report talking about Obama speaking at memorial services and how the police are probably going to turn their backs on him ... to say that he hasn't spoken about police deaths isn't accurate. He might not have made specific comments about this specific case, but he has spoken about it.

I don't see how he should be expected to speak about every incident like this or every service man that is killed in action (or murdered once home). He would do almost nothing but that.

I just posted this and am passing no judgement either way.

Nowhere did I imply that President Obama criticized any cops. I also NEVER said President Obama was wrong for publicly referencing the death of the thug Michael Brown. I simply said I don't remember any other President doing the same. I think you need to have Countryroads give you some pointers on reading comprehension.

Yep. I obviously missed my business writing class.
Had you successfully completed a Business English class, you could have gotten your message across without all the superfluous verbiage. The purpose of the class in business is to convey the message and don't waste my time reading your unnecessary prose and poetry. You take those other English classes to learn to be political and proper in your delivery and maintaining proper form. But it is understood that people are busy and only require brevity in delivering a thought.

Since no one on here had to pass the class, I thought it necessary to explain the class to non-business majors.

Actually, it is not a bit difficult to understand the closeness between all officers who serve. Old school always addressed fellow officers as "brother". When one was injured on the job, it was taken personally and the pain was felt by all.

Dog, no harm no foul. Can enjoy discussion at any time with a man who shows integrity. Do get a bit thin skinned with those who bust balls for sport. Don't yet fully appreciate how some use the forum and just don't want contact with those.
