Before I provide a synopsis of this game I want to dispell some posters theories about Varina's alleged decline. Varina finished the 2021 regular season 9-1 averaging 32 points a game and giving up 9. That's a mov of +23. This years team is also 9-1. They are averaging 31 points a game and giving up 10. That's a mov of +21. Not a lot of difference especially since their 2022 loss to Highland Springs was a much better loss than their 2021 loss to PH Ashland. Granted the offense does seem to be a bit stale or one dimensional at times, but people need to realize the loss of Ant Harris was huge. Gems like him don't come along often.
I could not acquire stats for Varina, but QB Derricott is a very dangerous player. He is getting it done on the ground and in the air. He has very capable receivers in Keyes and company and I don't blame Derricott for throwing it up to those beast on the outside. Defensively, Varina is very sound and their front seven are hard to move off the ball. Their defensive backs take a lot of risk and can be had if you can protect the qb.
Matoaca finished the season 6-4. Their losses came to Hanover, Dinwiddie, Thomas Dale, and Hopewell. With the exception of the Dinwiddie game (42-0) the Warriors were in all of these contest until the end. Matoaca averages 25 points a game while giving up 16. That's a mov of +11.
Offensively, Matoaca is led by QB Riley Justus. He has completed 99 passes for 1,575 yards, 17 tds and 8 interceptions. His top receivers include P. Lewis 16 catches for 372 yards and 6 touchdowns and B. Yates 27 catches for 414 yards and 5 touchdowns. The Warrior rushing attack is led by C. Williams with 695 yards and 3 touchdowns. Defensively, Matoaca has a decent sized front, but they can be run on. G. Hall leads the team in tackles with 65. C. Williams has 8 sacks and D. Newberry-Short has 3 interceptions.
This game is very intriguing, because neither team concentrates on the running game. Both teams are capable of defending the pass and have above average receivers. In my opinion, the key is physical presence. Matoaca plays a bit soft at times and if you smack them in the mouth they will break. Varina is a very capable bully and will do so. Varina 28-14.
