with their QB's. A lot of poeple don't realize that it takes time for QB's to develop in the SEC.
Someone can say "John Bond" all day, but that kind of proves my point because the SEC has improved an awful lot since 1980. Tim Tebow was treated as a false idol by Florida fans and the media, and he was merely a role player as a freshman. Matt Stafford was the first pick in the draft a couple of years ago, and he struggled mightily as a freshman. Eli Manning was also the first pick of the draft, and he not only RS, he was a back-up his RS freshman year- and this was in part at the request of his Dad, who knows a thing or two about playing QB. The last really good QB that I can remember to come in as a true freshman and do well was Peyton Manning- one of the top 10 QB's in NFL history. And even then, he only started because of injuries to their other QB's.
Now, at MSU, I have seen us do things with our QB's that were outright stupid- see Omarr Conner as the poster child for this. Jackie burned his redshirt so that he could play a few meaningless snaps at WR during a 2-10 seaon, and then Croom continued to shuttle him between WR and QB in addition to not designing plays that took advantage of his strengths.
And despite some of the greats in the SEC taking their lumps or having to be brought along slowly, we expect a Peyton Manning type performance right off the bat, and if it doesn't happen, we quickly discard that QB for the next "real deal". We don't care about the long term because "he's better than what we have now, put him in now!" It really pisses me off to be sitting in the stands, and the QB will throw an incompletion, and some idiot will inevitable start calling for the back-up. It's retarded.
I'm glad that we RS Tyler Russell, and not because I do or don't think he's the "real deal". I'm glad because we are actually trying to develp him. And as far as the spring game- that's not a huge concern for me right now. Because he is learning. He is still developing, and on top of it, we have Chris Relf who can play QB. I honestly do not, and would not have expected Tyler to be reaady to start in the SEC at this point in his career. I do expect him to be the top back-up and to continue to develop and to get some game experience. That he is doing. I do expect him to be able to be the starter if need be by his sophomore year- he may not have to be because of Relf being a senior.
The spring game performance does not concern me either because between then and now, he will get a lot more reps, and he will continuie to develop and the main thing I want to see is if he learns from and improves upon that performance. And I believe that Tyler Russell will do that.
