Vent free gas logs-good or bad?

Kinda wondered a similar thing. We've been thinking about getting a gas insert for the basement for emergencies......etc. We already have a fireplace there that is on an exterior wall so running the gas line through the wall to a small tank would be easy.
My house came with one, thinking about maybe switching to an LED fireplace. Don't really need the heat, just wanted to look at it.
I have vented, and it really doesn't put off any heat. All the heat goes right up the chimney.

I have two in my house. Absolutely love them. The one in the living room can run you out of the room if you turn the remote all the way up on the burner...which comes in handy if you've been outside in the cold. Or you can turn it on low and chill comfortably.

I have had both and like the ventless system better, but get the remote control.
Another thing I have noticed is when I had the logs hooked up to an LP tank, I got a smell that I didn't like and didn't use it very often. The house I have now has Natural Gas and don't have a smell at all.

Ours works great. The ventless is the way to go. And, yeah, get the remote control. Also, make sure you have a blower with it. Not much heat unless you get it out of the logs into the house.
They work fine with natural gas, I've heard of people having trouble with propane putting off suet.
I have ventless logs in my house and use them only a few times a year but if the power is ever out in winter I can heat my whole house with them and that alone makes them worth it.

I used them a few times last year, did notice kind of a smell to them-which I'm told is the ceramic logs... carbon monoxide being odorless and all. Did get a CO detector for the room.
American Lung Association says they aren't a great idea for people with asthma or respiratory problems.
They are great...caveats...CO detector in the house is a must, cathedral ceilings are a waste for the logs (too much heat loss). Have vent-less, 10+ years and they work great when we use them. Also, gas company kinda has monopoly.
Have cathedral ceilings and big *** fan in the room, have heard that this can mess with the ventless combustion.
It may not be as bad as in the past. Before they changed owners, unless you were a Lennox dealer couldn't get parts.Had to stick with compan9that put it in.
Parts are alot easier to get now!
