TE K. Cook caught a td pass. TEs have primarily blocked, but they are involved.

No direct step to Dixon so far.

Empty backfield and five wides often.

The DEs look good. Sean Ferguson and Devin Jones are very active.

Be thankful we have Leon Berry. Solid receiver.

I'm encouraged. We still have a ways to go, but we are improved on offense.

Oh yeah. Brauchle ... the real deal. Nailed a 57 yarder and a 46 yarder.

...of course, some people, I'm sure, saw totally different things:

1) For a depleted WR corps, some nice catches were made. Wilder & Robinson were impressive.

2) State now has a kicking game. The new youngsters can kick the shat out of the ball.

3) Hard to tell about the OL, because they were not forced to hold blocks. But their technique & body shapes (as in no fatties) all appear improved.

4) Dixon is still the same ole Dixon. Meaning he is still a stud hoss.

5) Relf shows promise. He is going to be a good fit in Mullen's offense once he matures & gets playing time in real games.

6) The defense looks good. Appears to be some depth, and impressive speed. Fergerson is going to be a beast.

Overall, the team appears bigger, and in excellent shape.

I realize it was MSU vs. MSU, but I thought this team had less talent than it has.

In closing, just one negative: Lee has to be more accurate with his passes. That has to be worked out & fixed before the JSU game.

I saw four wins in the fall. The guys walking out behind me were debating that: 4, 5, or 6.

I didn't see an SEC major threat. We won't scare many big-boy teams. I
hope I am totally wrong.

This is the first post I've ever made from the Barnes and Noble parking lot across the street from Davis Wade.
That's kinda neat, for me.

They got after it in 8 different match ups - even ripping helmets off. Athough there appears to be a lot of work and development to do, I am excited about our football future.

There are four wins on the schedule. JSU, Houston, Middle Tennessee and Kentucky. However, what I saw today makes me think we could slip up and win at Vanderbilt or Arkansas and possibly upset one of the five potential top 10 teams coming to Starkville in the fall to get to 6. We will not lay over and get beat by anyone.

I want to win them all.

I like Mullen, and what he's doing.
The baseball team...I like what Cohen's doing with what he has.

I likes our new football PA guy.

Our WR group may not be that bad come the fall. Berry & Wilder looked good - was glad to see that Wilder can actually catch the ball. I think that's been a concern. We all know he's got size & speed, but he made some nice catches. I thought Terrance Davis made some nice moves after the catch - as much as everyone has talked up Robinson, Davis looks more promising to me (of course that's based on one spring game). Add to that group McRae, Bumphis, and probably another true FR or two... we may not be too bad.

My bigger concern is QB. I was disappointed with Lee - his accuracy didn't appear to be any better than Relf. I think the OL will be okay once you put the 5 best guys together instead of having them split up like tonight. I look forward to watching a replay on CSS so I can focus on our main guys a little better. I think most of the OL problems during the game were from our 2nd string type guys.

Defense looks solid other than the secondary. I'm afraid it will be a problem, especially at corner. But on a good note, the strength programs looks to be having an effect. I thought many of the guys that looked scrawny last year appeared to have added a few pounds - specifically Zach Smith & Wade Bonner (I'm sure there are others, but I just remember those two standing out).

I don't know that the problem quality as much as it is quantity. Mullen has said that he wanted eight WR's that we could rely on. We have maybe four right now, not including any Fr.

Relf looked like a better QB than Lee...and if Wilder is a world-class sprinter, why did he get caught from behind on that pass play towards the end of the half?

Houston beat tulsa 70-30 last year (Tulsa was ranked at some point last year). MTSU beat Maryland last year. Those two teams are not cupcakes.

to use 8 to 10 WRs. I remember hearing the WR coach (who happens to be our current RB coach - Coach Knox) at Auburn last spring say that they will actively use that many WRs in their Tony Franklin spread offense.

and wondered if he was still slowed by injuries. I vaguely remembering reading that his speed is "back end" in that, for a world class runner, he starts slower but beats you on the back end once he's in full stride. Those comments could have been pure speculation - I don't know.

Relf looked like a better QB than Lee
The whole time I was there I was thinking the same thing...yet at the end of the game Lee had better numbers by a substantial margin than Relf did.

Although to be fair the Maroon team (Lee) threw a lot more than the White team (Relf) did.

Lee's biggest problem was overthrowing receivers. He really needs to work on his deep ball. I know Mullen was fairly exasperated with him missing at least two easy TD passes because of that.

Last thing I noticed -- Lee didn't make many throws that looked to be in danger of getting picked off, but Relf had several. If our secondary didn't have stone hands there would've been about 5 extra interceptions yesterday.

In any event, Relf completed 50% of his passes, Lee completed 57%. I'll take those completion percentages any day against SEC competition. It's a hell of a lot better than what we've been getting recently.

that he was going to meet with the track coach this week. I suppose that is about track participation but I don't know. Isn't he on a football scholarship?

I was very surprised at how cohesive the offense looked and a few of the new receivers looked pretty good. We're obviously deficient at QB and way too thin at WR, but overall the offense looked good. Very few mistakes, pre-snap penalties, etc. It actually looked like a pretty sharp, crisp offense. And the improvement in the kicking game is like night and day.

on BDJ.com that Relf had Dixon and that might have played a part in how the D keyed on Lee.

I do agree that Relf looked better in the first half.

It seemed like Lee's Oline protection wasn't as good as Relf's to start. That probably had something to do with some of his miscues.

I dissagree. Relf didnt look bad but if it wasnt for Wilder, Relf's numbers would have been horrendous. As far as Lee goes, it looks like the coaches gave him a Chase Daniels highlight tape and told him to emulate everything about him. It looks like the coaches have totally changed all of his mechanics (for the better).

/Not saying Lee = Daniels
//Just noticed similar mechanics
///I was pleasantly surprised by both QBs
