Bump. Great pic! Seems like this holiday gets lost in the mix, which isn't right given their sacrifice and commitment.

Thank Vets today (any day really) for their service. Also take the time to explain to your kids/friends kids what the holiday is about. Unfortunately a lot of people take their service for granted. Make sure your kids aren't among that group.

I was a kid during the Vietnam War when it was in vogue to spit on Vets, and call them "baby killers". My Dad would have no part in that, and taught us to respect Vets because they protected us, and kept us free. The "baby killers" were the politicians; Vets were doing their duty.

Great post LC.

I was in high school during the height of Viet Nam. I like most my age was against the war. My Dad, a WWII vet who saw more than his share of combat in North Africa and Italy, was too. He too would get very angry if I or anyone else said anything bad against the people serving.

Everything changed for me in college. During the time I lived off campus my roommates were both returning vets. One was on the Forrestal when it blew up, the other manned a machine gun on a helicopter for the 1st Cav. Both were on partial disability. One physical, one mental. I'd sit in a corner and listen while they and other vets would talk about their experiences. Sometimes it was funny, sometimes sad. All I knew was these guys were only a couple years older than me but came from a world not of their choosing that I could never understand. I have always had the upmost respect for anyone who puts on the uniform since.

In London today, the whole city stops at 11:00am for two minutes of silence. Boats on the Thames dropped to idle, cars pull over awesome display.

The 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month. End of WW I. 1918.
