Former coach here...

Had a ethics question pop in my head and thought id share it here.

Let’s say it’s the semi-finals of the playoffs and you get the last two weeks of film sent from your opponent.

What is ok and what is too far when looking for film on an opponent?

* only work w what you were given
* earlier teams on their schedule send you film
* earlier teams not send you film but send you their breakdown and game plan (maybe set up a call)
* earlier team won’t send you film but will let you have access to their Hudl account (maybe you have a friend as an assistant coach who’s HC won’t exchange film w you)
* earlier opponent agrees to come meet with you and help prep for game (maybe he’s a friend of yours)
* a coach send you not only their game but all the scout film they have as well.

It is pretty hard not to get every relevant game.

A coach I know received over 30 films of their week one playoff opponent a few years ago. Pretty much everyone in the conference hated the guy and sent their film without being asked.

If they played in a public place, it's fair game. If they secretly taped a practice or two, that's no bueno.
