His biggest problem is his awareness in the pocket. He is a little slow (slower than Relf or Favre), but if he can simply learn when to step up or know how to move out of the pocket when it's time, he would be incredible. A mix of Russell's passing ability and size with Favre's mobility, he would be unstoppable. Russell has an extremely accurate arm when he is confident and calm, but his biggest problems I think are tunnel vision looking downfield and he seems to get shaken up after some big hits and loses his accuracy. Also, I think he tries too hard sometimes to squeeze passes in where they really don't need to go. But as far as raw passing ability, he's one of the best I've seen play at State.

*Edited to add that his best pass in this video is his pass at 2:43. That pass demonstrates how big of an arm he has. Not only that, most quarterbacks struggle to hit the back shoulder flatfooted with no pressure, Russell nailed an incredibly difficult throw off his back foot. You don't see many QBs making that kind of throw.

I do not remember a QB that threw a better ball than he does here at State. But you are right... Sometimes he stands in the pocket like he is stuck in the mud. You don't have to be all that mobile to avoid pressure, but you just need to be taught how to do it. (See: Ben Roethlesburger)

Fant just wasnt upright all that often. Russell definitely has more talent and also more talent around him. Factor in a better system- and Russell and Prescott both could put up some huge numbers before they are done

Amazing how much the running game improved with the passing game working. And Tyler can run just enough to keep the option game on the table. Although I hope he doesn't run too much. I hope he gets the start this week.

and Fant couldn't make some of the throws Russell has made, although I think Fant was more mobile than Russell. And you are correct that Russell has better help around him, but as far as raw passing ability, I think Russell is better.

and this is the first footage i've seen. did we run any of the pistol with ralf like we did russell? i've wondered why we haven't ever utilized this formation more. it keeps the qb in the shotgun but it lets the rb be as deep as he would be in a traditional set. the rb has more time to see the hole and let the play develope. i like that we have started using it, just curious if we did with ralf. i also saw how the oline worked together while carmon was at lt. i haven't seen that since auburn. i don't give a **** how bad their d was, the line made holes like they were doing at the beginning of the season. right now, clausell is a cancer to his offense.

Tyler has more talent and will most probably make a bunch of throws that Fant didnt before its over- but to this point- Russell hasnt made very many real good throws. He made a couple Saturday that were very good- no doubt- but Fant could throw the ball very well.

pass protection of any qb that ever played at State. Russell and Fant have similar skill sets, I just hope that Russell can meet his potential considering the talent around him and the coaching that he is receiving. I am really expecting big things out of Prescott too though, I hope that he ends up being the true double threat qb that Mullen's system trulyneeds to run at full throttle.

wins either one of them have or don't have, I'm merely talking about raw talent. Fant had some good games while he was here, but I'm talking simply about observations I've seen from both of them concerning raw talent. Russell is still young and when he isn't being chased out of the pocket or trying to feed the ball through 3 defenders, he's pretty spot on with his passing.

he would make an NFL throw on one down, then come back with his patented WTF throw on the next down.. rainbow into triple coverage or something else equally dumb.. I'll never forget he almost threw away the Auburn game in 2000. Playing well all the way down the field then hits a LB in the hands perfectly with nothing but green grass in front of him. Luckily, the guy couldn't catch.

Carmon's block in the first play in that video. I'm not one of those people saying "it was all Carmon" but that's a big difference in Clausell backpeddling and falling down. Tyler's a baller, I don't think anyone is denying that.
