"Vince Kehres employs a unique 4-2-5 defensive scheme at the University of Toledo, featuring a five-across secondary alignment that is distinct from the Odd Stack structure used by other programs like Jim Knowles' system at Penn State.
This system is Quarters-based, allowing for a mix of open and closed post coverages, with the Rockets using nearly a 50/50 split between the two in recent seasons.
The defense leverages its two safeties as "vices" to clog the middle of the field, forcing offenses to the outside and deep, while also disrupting in-breaking routes and RPOs.
On the field side, the nickelback uses a MES (man except shallow) concept on the slot receiver, with the safety acting as the primary force player near the box from depth, while on the boundary, the safety sits in the Glance window and the cornerback plays man coverage on the single receiver.
The five-across secondary and coverage-dominant nickelback allow Kehres to mix and match coverages and defenders to exploit opponent weaknesses.
Blitzing is not a central component of the scheme; the Rockets are below the FBS average in box and linebacker pressure, but they are above average in six-man blitzes, often using Cover 0 behind these blitzes due to their nine-man spacing in Quarters coverage.
The defense is designed to squeeze space and force offenses into low-percentage plays, with a strong emphasis on limiting explosive plays and controlling the field through disciplined execution."

Disciplined execution- sorely needed in Lincoln

Well, don't love this:

Saw that too. It's a risk imo, I think Nebraska is at a point in time that they will have to take a risk, the likelihood of getting someone that has done it in the B1G or SEC and been successful is pretty much nil, considering that person is on other B1G and SEC programs lists to hire as well. We can lie to ourselves all day and say that we can compete with those programs at their level but the reality is we aren't currently able to.

Yeah we may be able to offer competitive pay but why would they choose NE over a top half B1G ten or SEC team. They wouldn't. The truth is we've been uncompetitive for over a decade now in the B1G, with only 1 out of the last 10 seasons having a winning conference record. You could argue we are at our lowest, at least recovering from the lowest point in our football program modern history (last 50 years).

So would I like a coach that has done it at the BIG or SEC level and been successful, of course, but it's not going to happen. Have to take a risk on an up and coming coach, give him the resources he needs, give him a couple years and reevaluate.

Can’t say i have watched any Toledo but they should have that good ranking then, yes? And with Toledo level talent.
We supposedly have Nebraska level talent and had the 23rd total defense after playing 8 teams that were 86th or worse in FBS… as well as playing Houston Christian HS( ranked 116 in FCS)
I’ll take my chances with whoever it is we get. Our offense effin sucks too so we need to work on that big time

rhule will be around for some time, because the Lincoln office knows by now musical chairs every 3 years with coaches doesn't work..so rhule need to think long as hard about this dc because we can't do another project dc...I'd take leonhart, vt hc, cal hc, first..then either this guy or smu guy..

Kehres has coached both OL and DL so he knows line play. Football still comes down to fundamentals and we weren’t good at them this year, blocking and tackling specifically
Glad he’s in town this weekend for an interview

Nebraska fan base: “quit hiring recycled coaches and get a young up and comer!”

also the Nebraska fanbase “why are we thinking about hiring a guy that has never had P4 success before?!? Unserious program!”

No one here has any idea if this guy will workout here. Rhule is going to hire the guys he wants. Then he can own the results. If it doesn’t work out, we’ll be back in the coaching carousel. Which seems to get worse every year

This is the guy. He’ll improve the defense and get hired away in two years.

None of us really know for sure how ANY DC hire would work out. Well that is as long as it isn’t Diaco. All WE can do is hope for the best. Even with the extension, my suspicion is that most candidates realize Rhule’s seat is warm and some top candidates might be reluctant to take the job. Next fall’s schedule probably doesn’t help either.

Relevant demonstrated success as a DC at the P4 level would be nice. The problems lie in Rhule’s seemingly warm seat and next year’s schedule. Even with the extension, I’m not sure outside assistants view him as untouchable.
