Brian O'Conner is a great baseball coach, and deserves all the accolades that UVA baseball gets. Grisham supported the program his son attended because Pat McMahon (I think it was him, not Polk) wouldn't give the kid a walk on spot at MSU.

O'Conner was a pitching coach at ND before he took the UVA job. I would have to think that any head coaching job in the ACC is a step up from that if he wants to advance his career, and I'm sure it pays more than ND.
