I used the US census definitions of metropolitan and micropolitan areas from the Table on this page:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virginia_statistical_areas

I see now that the map on that page also shows a Big Stone Gap micropolitan area of Wise County, Dickenson County, and Norton. It was apparently just established in 2013. Those account for 20 of the state titles that I had listed in the "Rural" category.

Statewide playoffs began in 1970 for Groups AA and A and in 1971 for Group AAA. For whatever reason, only regional championships were played in Group AAA in 1970. James Wood was apparently voted champion. Since it wasn't decided on the field, I excluded them which results in no playoff state championships for Frederick County.

Andrew Lewis won state title in 1964. They were the high school in Salem then and is now the middle school.

Handley has 2 state titles Winchester/Frederick County. I saw the mention of Harrisonburg but not Winchester.

I think his totals are for the playoff era, starting in 1970. Hampton's had twelve since playoffs were implemented. Again referencing the playoff era, Salem's taken sole possession of second place among extant schools with eight titles; Powell Valley also won eight.

Yes, that's right. I'm only counting state titles won in the playoff era.

I also included Fredericksburg, Winchester, and Culpeper in the Northern Virginia count since they're grouped together in the Washington Combined Statistical Area. I now think that I should separate Winchester and Culpeper out by the Micro/Metropolitan Statistical Areas. The Fredericksburg area is defined to be in the core NOVA MSA.

I have an idea for a follow-up which will more evenly compare how different areas have done.

I lost count here, but it was so many hanging from the rafters, that the roof collapsed on the gym and they had to build a new school

That was a good one!

Remember perhaps two years ago, when we were discussing Blacksburg's athletic program, and we said all that was needed was for the two primary boys sports to get back on track? Well.....it looks like full steam ahead.
