If the Gator takes UT over MSU, they don't give a damn about rewarding anyone but themselves.

Common opponents: Florida, LSU, UAB, UGA, Alabama, Memphis, Ole Miss, Kentucky. That's a pretty good sample, 8 common opponents. UT 4-4, MSU, 6-2. And one of UT's wins is a 2OT thriller vs. UAB.

What else can we do? Sell out every home game? Hire a coach with national appeal? Play in the toughest division in all of college football? Win 2 more games than your other choice?

When it comes to bowl time, it's all about who generates the most money. In terms of revenue, it probablyIS better forthem to bring Tennessee.Bigger name, bigger fan base, and that would equal more viewers. I'm not saying we aren't a good draw, but Tennessee hastradition on their side that we don't, and that plays a huge part in these bowl selections.

he directly said something like this...

If the Gator takes UT over MSU, they don't give a damn about rewarding anyone but themselves.
I think his quote was "we don't care about the football, we care about the impact to city economy"

Do they think UT is really a better opponent? And why wouldn't the SEC "consult" them to take the obviously better team. It's completely nuts.

this isn't the NCAA Tourny where you win your way to the top.... this is like the old school baseball regionals where whomever promises the most money will be there.

“Our team selection is based on three criteria. Heads in beds, fannies in seats and big TV ratings,” Catlett said.</p>

ratings. That sounds like an Independence bowl game to me. They might can market it as the battle for mediocrity. That name is now trademarked so don't try to sell it to the Gator bowl.

I get the money angle, and as Slive showed in his Camgate commentary, that's what matters. It's hard to believe that would cost us 3 or more bowl spots, but I don't suppose I'd be surprised.

It will come down to the SEC "consulting" someone to take a better team (SCAR or MSU) over a national name (UF or UT). That doesn't bode well for us either.

If that's how they make their selections, it's a pretty big failure. A Tennessee team with 6 wins isn't going to bring more fans than State, especially since we've already oversold our allotment. And the Gator Bowl brings in nothing but crappy TV ratings....unless the game is actually good. State gives a much better chance of that than Tennessee.

I don't disagree with you. Wardlaw mentioned earlier that no one wants to start off on the wrong foot with the Gator Bowl. I get the impression Catlett issomewhat of a prima donna from things I've read. If, as someone posted earlier, the SEC offices have their hands in the selection as much as stated, we'll get what Slivegives us. We deserve the CFA, we could accept being offered the Gator. But to drop to the Music City would be wrong. I have rooms in Atlanta and now rooms in Nashville. I'll go wherever it is because, in the long run, it helps MSU. Doesn't meanI'll like it.
