Their coach took the only slim shot he had at winning it and it didn't work out. If he'd pitched his ace, he might have been able to go WKU-W, UM - L, WKU-L. As it is, he'll go WKU-L, Monmouth - W, WKU-L. No 17ing difference. And he very well might have gone the 2nd route even if he had pitched his ace.
