Wakefield went 6-2 this year with a couple of nice wins. This was followed up by a respectable year last year. They dropped down to D1 a few years back knowing they wouldn't be eligible for the playoffs and that remains the case this year.

Does anyone know what their future plans are going forward? They would be a middle to lower of the pack C2 school in terms of enrollment and from my knowledge that is not changing anytime soon. I have no idea what their roster size was this year and projected in years forward. Just curious if we may see them in C2 at the next cycle.

Really hate to see all these teams drop down a class when they aren't eligible. Just messes with the point system and playoff seeding too much. Plus there is no extra points awarded for playing a team up a class. Silly it is even an option. Curious if any other state even offers this option?

This was looked at once and Nebraska is one of only three states that allow it

Fan or not a fan, does anyone have insight as to what their future may hold? Just curious. Would be nice to see another C2 team added back into the mix in this area. Pretty thin right now.

Just looked it up on MaxPreps, only shows 23 with 6 seniors. Not sure how accurate that is though. If that's the case going forward I'm guessing theyll stay in 8 man.

Made me think about the lack of 11 man schools in the area compared to the past. Just looking at the 12 most NE counties, I came up with 18 schools that in 2000, when the current seniors were born, were playing 11 man.

Winnebago
Homer
Emerson-Hubbard
Lyons-Decauter (still 11 man with Bancroft-Rosalie)
Pender
Wisner-Pilger
Wakefield
Laurel-Concord
Randolph
Hartington
Winside
Neligh-Oakdale
Elkhorn Valley
Osmond
Plainview
Creighton
Bloomfield
West Point CC (Guardian Angels)
19 if you count Lutheran High who was playing 8 man in 2000 but shortly after moved to 11 man for about a 15 year stretch until this last year.

That's enough schools for three whole districts. Some of these were even C1.

Wow I didn’t know Winside and Hartington High played 11 man.

It’s crazy to me Creighton was C1 in 2004-2005.

Some old C2 districts were...

Scribner-Snyder (now C1 with LV)
Lyons-Decatur
Oakland-Craig (still C2)
WPCC
Wisner-Pilger
Pender

Wakefield
Laurel-Concord
Homer
Emerson-Hubbard
Winnebago
Ponca

Enrollments are dropping throughout rural Nebraska. I think that C-2 football might cease to exist in a few years.

Hartington's first season of 8 man was 2001. Many of the old Lewis and Clark teams went to 8 man in the early 2000's. Most of the old NENAC teams were just a few years behind.

Again, would love to see some of the above mentioned schools make a return. Unfortunately it's probably not likely unless some coops and/or consolidations take place. My guess is that GACC, Wakefield (higher chance if they begin coping boys with Allen too), and Laurel-Concord-Coleridge are the most likely to return. Outside shot of Bago as well.

Winside had a string of four or five years where they were a small 11-man team, otherwise they've generally always been an 8-man school.

It was pretty small from what I gather. They have a lot of boys at the school, but not many play football. It's only a matter of time before they are fully-cooped with Allen I think....not sure if that'll get them solidly back into 11-man ranks or not.

Back to Wakefield in general, man they are playing some great football right now. Would have loved to see what kind of run they could make in the playoffs right now.

I think Wakefield and Allen could form a tough team in C2. If they went by this years numbers, Wakefield has 54 boys and Allen has 28. That would put them towards the bottom in C1.

Not correct... That 28 is a three year enrollment, senior class not figured into that 28.

True...I stand corrected. They would be missing the freshman class then. Just saying 28 is not the full "pool" of boys they pulled the 24 from.

Does any other state besides South Dakota have 9-man football?

Edit:

North Dakota, South Dakota and Minnesota sponsor 9-man football.

9 man actually makes for a better transition down for 11 man, or especially for the schools that bounce back and forth because you wouldn't have to redo your playbook all the time. You just simply remove the Tackles and your backfield stays the same. Would love if the state would consider going D9, D8, and D6. Makes the most sense.

Would love to see one class of 6 man, one class of 8 man and one class of 9 man.

Do 9 man teams play on a 80 yard field as well?

I believe they play on fields similar to 11 man. Personally I'd think 9 man would be more suitable on a 100 yard length field but the width of an 8 man field.

Probably not gonna happen anytime soon but I do think that most of C2 and D1 could be 9 man, one class. Maybe have the cutoff be 60 or so and below?

I think 9 man in SD is played on an 11 man field. It's been quite a few years since I've seen any of the championship games in South Dakota. I don't remember the field being smaller when they played their 9 man games in the Dakota Dome in Vermillion.

Yes the play on 11 man field in fact some states play 8 man on 11 man fields. Gary Debor (LN) one year proposed to start playing on 11man fields in Nebraska.

In South Dakota the home team gets to choose if they play on 11 man sized or 8 man sized field. In championship it is 100 yard field
