Wal Mart steaks?

So I was watching Gordon Ramsey's Master Chef and they (the three chefs) were really touting Wal Mart steaks. Something was said to the effect that they are in the top 20% of USDA cuts of beef.

Are they really all that? Does Sam's Club carry the same meat?

"You'll love 'em or your money back......"

Isn't that how they say it in the TV ad ??

BTW, if Ramsey and others indeed are saying what initially seem to be unusually positive things about the product, it wouldn't surprise me to learn they're sponsored in some way by Walmart (which isn't intended to imply the product isn't any good). In some regard, this sounds similar to all the unexpectedly nice stuff Bob Vila said about Bella Wood flooring before it became common knowledge that he wasn't just a spokesperson, but a principal in the Company.

Of course, Walmart would seem to have a little more juice behind its claims than anything the self-righteous Vila would say. Regardless, if Costco can become the world's largest purveyor of fine wine, why can't WMT eventually become the largest retail seller of choice (probably not prime) steak.

I've found that the Walmart and Sam's Club steaks are noticeably better in quality than those at my local grocery stores (in St. Louis). They just taste better (and seem fresher). And I detest going to Walmart.

There is no doubt in my mind that those three chefs are pimping Walmart steaks for free, but I doubt any of them would endorse a product that wasn't what it claimed to be. They do say they are choice grade, not prime, but the statement to the effect that only 'one in five choice steaks make Walmart's grade' caught my attention. Can't recall exactly how that was phrased.

I have yet to walk out of a Walmart with a steak, however I almost always leave Sam's Club with a rib eye or strip and have rarely been disappointed. I'm guessing it's the same supplier, just wondering if anyone knows for sure, and also wondering if anyone here is a regular consumer that could verify that the ads have substance.

Really, why's that ??

I freely admit I haven't seen the broadcast in question; but it would honestly surprise me beyond belief if an ad-sponsored Show allowed a specific non-sponsorship brand name to be mentioned. Heck, Food TV goes out of their way to mask the identify of virtually everything used their cooking shows that comes with a label; as I recall, they have an entire graphics Department which does nothing but create and apply bogus labels to packaged products.

Regardless, none of that has to do with whether or not the product is good; frankly, I have no reason to believe it isn't at least the equal of comparable products available in their direct competition's fresh meat cases. Come to think of it, Walmart probably has an exceptionally vested interest in making sure they get a premium food product like this right.....one for which they need to condition customers to consider using them.....during what appears to be a national roll-out.

None of this matters, of course.....just making conversation.

Wal-Mart steaks used to suck...tried them once and they had a rubbery consistency...haven't bought one since.

On the other hand, Sam's Club has exceptional steaks that are cut in-house.

Also a big fan of their whole pork loin. You can ask the cutters to keep half for a roast and slice the other half into chops. Good eats!

I'll say this about their steaks.......

I quit buying ANY meat from Walmart a long time ago. Then I started seeing all of their "money back" ads about their steaks and thought I would give them a try. To me they are the best steaks you can buy outside of a local butcher shop! You have to remember it isn't all of their steaks just certain ones that are advertised this way. This summer I have cooked nothing but those WalMart steaks on the grill. You should give them a try. By the way their T-Bone and NY Strip are the best imo.

Poorly phrased on my part. Of course they are getting paid.
