What a great story and what a great coach we have. It's nice to be able to be proud of the type of men we have running our programs. I'd hate to be in the papers every other month or so for say, arranging hookers for minors or cheating.

Hopefully he can become a grad assistant after next season. I'll be pulling for the guy!

It really is a great story, especially this time of year. Jen Smith won't be working at the LHL forever, unless she wants to do so. She does a great job with the straight sporting news, and the features/human interest pieces.

Guys, just think of the difference in Coach Stoops and Petrino. One has class, and cares about his players, and the other one is classless and only cares about himself. I can give you a good example of the difference of the two coaches.
Coach Stoops cares about Alex, and told him not to worry, he would remain on scholarship, and be a graduate assistant.
Petrino talked Michael Bush into coming back for his senior year, and not going to the NFL, after his junior year, 2006. His first game in his senior year, 2007 against UK, he broke his leg, which cost him a lot of money in the draft. In the 2nd or 3rd round of the draft, Petrino could have drafted him. He wouldn't! In the 4th round, Oakland drafted him. If he had turned pro after 2006, he was projected to go in the Top 10. This shows what loyalty Petrino has, only to himself.
Another part of the story is Michael wanted to come to UK, but Joker told him we couldn't get him eligible, because of his high school grades. Michael knew Petrino would NOT give him a try at QB, since Brian Brohm was also going to UofL, but Petrino told him he would. Petrino lied to Michael. UofL got him eligible, but we'll never know how.

Brings to mind one of my favorite verses , , , Romans 5:3 Rejoice in your sufferings, sufferings brings perseverance, perseverance character, and character hope.

God Bless Alex and wish him the best

I emailed Jen and thanked her for the article. Most of us just see these kids in a uniform. We praise and ridicule them, but for the most part have absolutely no idea what is or has been going on in their lives off the field.

With that kind of personal story Alex positions himself to follow his dream of coaching and become a leader of young men. He can use himself as an example of overcoming hard knocks and finding success on and off the field.

Can't express how proud I am of Alex for grinding it out from childhood until present day and never quitting or conceding defeat. His story is a great one. I hope he's a frequent visitor for games after he leaves.:fistbump:

Thanks, I was just going to say the same thing, and while this shows this side of her stories I also think she does a very good job covering the straight football news.

Thanks for the input. I never wanted any part of BP at my University at any time. And your story fits in nicely with everything I know about the man.

I got some criticism in the thread about the two UL players that were shot about 2 AM at the party, because I didn't have a lot of sympathy for them, because they weren't seriously hurt I said I would save my sympathy for someone more deserving, like our WR that got injured on the playing field. Looks like I made a wise choice.

I was so excited to see what Montgomery would become. I thought we had a steal, as he made some unreal catches in high school. He had great hands. Just a shame what injuries done to this fine young man. I'm rooting for his success, which I'm sure he will attain.

There was also a story about Terry Samuels who just graduated on Friday. He played in the early 90s but did not get his degree. Has made agood career in business and insurance but felt like not having his degree held him back and finally got it done. Congratulations! !

This is why I love football players so much and don't understand why we adorn guys who play basketball here for one year.

Great story and one that needs to be shared to many. Thanks for posting OP.
