if Cohen doesn't win the vast majority of the first twenty games, sec games are going to be brutal.

that we have is Ole Miss in the Governor's Cup. USM would be a close second.

From the out of state division- Lamar made a regional, I believe or they were on the bubble. We play them to start the year, so I suspect that they will see Stratton and possibly Routt or one of our other weekend starters when we play them, so they will get our best pitchers.

Also, of note- we only play USM once next year, and that's in Pearl. That makes our schedule slightly easier, although yes, I am aware that we won the last two on campus games the last two years.

You will also notice that the schedule is very front loaded- moreso than in past years. What that means is we are playing very few non-conference games during the SEC schedule. That will help save the pitching a little bit because it means more rest and time to practice if necessary.

Last year, playing UCLA and Oklahoma was pretty unnecessary considering the shape that our program is in. Although, I will say that when we do get up to speed, I'm all for playing good teams like that.

has been in. And that is that we need wins and a regional a whole lot more than we need a challenging schedule. The only difference is regional picks for baseball do consider RPI where football bowl games don't but right now we need wins if for nothing else just to get the fan base back a little bit.

But the good news is that since we play in the SEC, our RPI hopefully will be OK. But because of that if we go 30-26 and finish say, 9th in the SEC, I wouldn't be shocked if we get left out of the Regionals because of RPI and SOS.

to happen to the program. Considering our present situation, just getting above .500 overall is absolutely necessary this year. He is teetering on the brink right now, and he needs to get something, anything, done that will give people some glimmer of hope that he is the guy to right the ship. I really thought he was, but he has severely eroded my confidence the past two years. Anyway, like you said, here's hoping for a winning season.

Just hanging around some baseball guys, apparently the attitude going into spring is "we're not going to be good in 2010, but wait till 2011"... and I hate that. We went 5-7 in Mullen's first year as coach, and that was disappointing, but I at least (along with all the football players) had something to believe in. Even this year, he said we're going to Atlanta. We didn't, but man... did we have a good year.

I can't put my finger on it, but something about Cohen and the Mississippi State marriage isn't clicking yet. I'm sick of these guys telling me "meh, not this year. 2011 though, we'll get it done."

Now if they start saying "wait until 2012", well, that's a problem.

The most encouraging thing to me is the fact that we are bringing in talented players- I'm basing this off of the recent MLB draft as much as anything.

Yeah sorry, they actually said "the year after this one" but for conversation's sake I used years, but mixed them up. My bad. 2012. The season after this one.

we won about 9 SEC games.

I don't get the easy scheduling. It makes no sense. You aren't fooling anyone and frankly, I think you are hurting the players by having them play bad teams. Its just going to make SEC play seem even more difficult.

while our talent level has been down. The hell with playing those hard schedules, let's wait and do that when our talent is on par with Oklahoma and UCLA. But, to keep it positive, the program is pretty much transitioned to Cohen now so hopefully the culture has changed and some early wins will provide confidence.

I've changed my stance on the cancer of Polks players vs. Cohen's guys. Neither were right or wrong, just different. We've been clamoring for a change of culture since Polk II began, now we're getting it. Had to pay a price for our previous mistakes though.

as compared with Mullen. The reason, even with the 5-7 season in football, there was so much hope because Mullen was showing, and continues to show, that he will "coach up" what he has and doesn't need a bunch 5 star HS recruits to consistently win. Unfortunately I'm not seeing that in baseball. It appears we are going to have to wait out Cohen bringing in enough recruits, and he is a good recruiter, to get this mess turned around. He and his current coaching staff do not seem to be capable through fundamentals and techniques of "coaching up" the baseball team to be highly competitive without a lot of talent on board. And unfortunately for us the roster this year will still only have 2 Cohen recruited classes on it. Also I think losing Bracewell for the year is going to hurt in that when healthy last year he appeared to be a pretty dominating closer.

of talent. Ron Polk left us almost COMPLETELY devoid of pitching, which is a pretty big aspect of baseball. Those Polk guys also didn't seem to be too good on defense as a whole either. They could hit for average though, although to me it seems they always struck out when it counted.
