Was the baseball game canceled?

The thinking is that with the chance of rain being pretty high, they didn't want Whitney to start and either have a long rain delay and not be able to come back in or not be able to pitch again tomorrow. That is what Ellis said. I could see that. We basically put the sacraficial lamb out there and hope for the best and save our "best" pitchers for saturday and sunday. Anyway, we're throwing the ball around the infield and making errors and are down 3-0.

the only thing I can think is that Cohen was betting on not getting the whole game in tonight so he wanted to see if Jones could hold them and then throw Moore tommorrow in the continuation. A lot of coaches won't thorw a guy on Friday for any significant time and then bring him back on saturday in a rain situation.

But we should've just started Whitney--of course, hindsight is 20/20

Edited to add: JacksonDevilDog gave this explanation above.

There was the threat of a rainout, so that is a possiblity. I think, however, that he is setting up the only decent two starters we have to compete on Sat. and Sun. against their #2 and 3 guys. I think this actually gives us a better chance to take a game or maybe two this weekend. Of course, we may lose all three. Anyway, I'll wait it out to hear an explanation or see how the weekend turns out before I question it. We all know this year is going to be patch work at best. Sometimes it will be successful, and others.......

the thing is you can't count on the weather. I believe that you play, and coach in this case, like it's 72 and clear no matter what.

But I'd like to hear the explanation myself because it could have been that Cohen felt like starting Whitney and Routt on Sat. and Sun. give us a better chance of winning the series, and he may have wanted to see if Jones could handle starting. Jones did have the best ERA on the team coming into this week.

And as far as Devin Jones- I just don't see him as a starter. I wouldn't mind maybe seeing him close a game or get an opportunity to do that, but he just doesn't know how to pitch yet. He can maybe go through the order once, but he shows everything he has in that first go round. Let him face three batters where he can just try to blow them away and see what happens.

One way or the other, this move failed.

Save Routt for Sunday against there 3rd starter, we may can score just enough runs to win one. No way we beat there ace no matter who we pitch. It takes some SEC talent to win and we just don't have much. If we win one I'll be happy,
Johen Cohen will win at Msu, just not this year. No need to be so hard on Cohen cause he is just dealing with "sweet young boys who try hard".

Btw, who thought we were gonna win tonight, I didn't. Oh, we may be bad, but watching Ga light up Tn makes me think we can take Tn.

and I'm one of John Cohen's biggest fans, but calling a spade a spade, I think he made a mistake. I'm a fan of Tony LaRussa, Joe Torre, Billy Martin, and Sparky Anderson- and heck throw Ron Polk I in there to- but if I think they made a mistake, I have no problems calling them out on it. And all of those guys I mentioned have made them before.

I'm not one of those idiots that thinks that if a squeeze play blows up that we should question the hire of John Cohen.

And who knows? Maybe Whitney wins tommorrow and then Routt wins on Sunday, and then I'm the idiot.

My expectation/prediction of 30 wins still stands- and that's about where we are.

As far as winning tonight- well, I really believe that as bad as our talent may be, we have a chance to beat anyone on any given night. UGA is probably better than Arkansas, I know they're ranked higher, whatever that's worth, and we had a legit chance to beat UGA in all three games last weekend. It's not like we got skulldrug by them- tonight is about as bad as it has gotten this year, and a lot of that is because our defense has let us down. It's hard to beat anyone making four errors. Plus, we've won the last two series against Arkansas. Now, yeah, we had a CWS team in 07, and last year the team was extra motivated because it was Polk's last weekend and they were the opponent, but still we played very well against them.

And yes, UT is horrible. I wouldn't be shocked if they fire Todd Raleigh because they have some talent- including Kentrail Davis who is going to be a first round pick, and Nick Hernandez as their ace who was very highly thought of last year. Plus they went 27-29 last year. We also beat them last year.

sat and sunday game. What I'm saying maybe Cohen and staff think this is our best chance to win a game or two by pitching our 1 and 2 against 2 and 3. I just know we have about 3 maybe 4 decent pitchers and saving them against 2 and 3 may be the answer to giving us a better chance to win.
Look at it this way against Ga we had our chances but we didn't swing the bat good enough aginst their top two pitchers, change is something Cohen will do and I'm for that.

in Moore. Last weekend, we started him so we pretty much had no pen.

I'd like to hear Cohen's reasoning behind all this.

and no matter what anyone thinks of the pitching or the reasoning behind it, our defense is what has let us down in this game, not necessarily because of Cohen's decision to pitch Jones.

I do see the point and maybe what he's trying to do, but I will say this- if I was going to do that, I would have started Crosswhite because of his versatility vs Jones. Especially since Routt eats innings. Of course you can't necessarily count on that, but going by what he has done so far, you maybe take a chance. You could maybe bring Crosswhite back on Sunday for an inning or two because he's kind of used to doing that anyway.

Of coures, hindsight is 20/20.

Edit for another thought- It's not out of the realm of possibility that we may not get this series in at all. Cohen may have used this as a "learning opportunity" for Jones figuring that there's a good chance that the game wouldn't be counted, and maybe the opportunity to get him an SEC start, see what happens, and if he gets shelled start doing a rain dance. Plus, with the weather, he may not have wanted to risk an injury to Whitney and/or saw this as an opportunity to get them some rest. I think they may even get snow tommorrow.
