If I remember right he thought it best to wait when Ronnie Green brought him the recommendations. If so, while that looks good for him, but it looks really bad for Ronnie Green that made the extension requests a few weeks back.

Riley's contract was actually extended following the 2016 season. Eichorst wanted the extension to be 2 years, but Bounds nixed that and told Eichorst that they should do 1 year and then wait till December to evaluate adding another year. Eichorst never revealed this to the media and was only found by the OWH during a search when they got a copy of Riley's contract.
