Wasn't there a legendary MSU/UM basketball game

that was played while it snowed outside? Like a four OT game or something like that? I know that there was some MSU/UM basketball game where someone for MSU was fouled shooting a three, and MSU needed three points to send the game to OT, and the guy sank all three while the Hump was silent?

Maybe I made about half of that up. Or more.

with no time left to send the game into OT. There was also a 4 OT game, that may or may not have been the same game.

Edit: 4OT was in 1990. Also an OT game in 1991. I think the 91 game is when Burns hit the 2 free throws after time expired.

If memory serves the 1991 games was also the start of the Gulf War.

Funny story about the 91 gameo. After the four OT game at the Hump in 90, 91 was another close one. As if got down to the end, there was a timeout. The cameras caught Ed Murphy telling his team "WE AIN"T 17ING WITH NO OVERTIME!" Soon after, Carter inbounded the ball to Cam who was fouled by Patrick Eddie with no time left. Cam, who was probably no better than a 65% FT shooter, went to the line with no one else on the lane. Just him and the ball. The first one was arced so high that I thought it was barely going to graze the front of the rim, but it somehow made it in. Somehow Cam made the second one too, and the Hump exploded. The cameras caught Murphy again on the sidelines as the second one went through, sort of wryly smiling and shaking his head. You could clearly read his lips as he muttered, "17ing overtime."

I don't even remember how we won it after that.

Infrequent posters Nugdawg and GrenadaDawg were there. Fishwater and Coach were probably there too. They're both old dues like me.

Both shots were ugly and clanged around and "got a lot of iron" as Jack says, but they both went in and we won in OT.Burns was a warrior.

How many think they could stand up there and knock down free throws under that kind of pressure?

I know I'd probably air ball one, especially if the lane was clear with zero time on the clock.

If I recall, we had two situations like that in the same game a couple years back. It was the SEC tourney opener against UGA. We win and we have a good shot at getting an NCAA bid especially with one more win. We lose, and we're NIT bound. We were down 3, and Warren got fouled shooting a 3 with only seconds left. He made all 3 shots to tie it, and UGA missed the shot at the buzzer, sending it to OT. The same thing happened in OT, except it was Huertas at the line shooting 3 with us down 3, and he hit all 3 of them to tie it, only this time UGA hit the game winner at the buzzer.

I think I'd probably crack under that type of pressure.

It reminds me of Darius Washington for Memphis a few years back. They were down 2 in the CUSA final to Louisville, needing a win for an NCAA bid. A loss meant the NIT. Washington got fouled shooting a 3 with no time on the clock. Hit 2 and he forces OT. Hit all 3 and they win. He hit the first, clanked the second, and once he clanked the second you knew there was no chance he'd hit the third. He missed the third under the pressure, and they lost by one.

ETA: Anyone ever been in that type of situation shooting free throws to tie or win? Even if it's just church league, high school, youth leagues, whatever?

Hell I almost threw up just watching Burns shoot the free throws. If I recall correctly, didn't Greg Carter hit a couple of buzzer beaters in that game?

And I want to say that each of the OT periods ended with the ball hitting iron either at the buzzer or on free throws with no time on the clock. The only game I have ever seen that can compare to that one was the Christian Latner Duke-KY game.

and Evans held for the last shot, and Ansu hit a bank from around the elbow to send it to OT. Then almost the exact same thing happened in OT, Ansu again, then we won in double OT.

I think.

Against the best team in the league. This team was sponsored and traveled around playing different tournaments. They had 8 or 9 black dudes with the PG being the shortest at 6'. Center was "Big-O" from Aberdeen if any of you know him, he's about 6'8". Our group of short white guys had hung with them the whole game, and in the closing seconds we were down by 3. I, being the natural size for a PG (6' - 250lbs at the time) had the ball and did what any white guy would do. I pumped got the defender in the air, jumped into him, and shot as time ran out. I got the foul and went to the line with no time on the clock with a chance to tie the game for the classic Cinderella story finish. I missed all three free throws and took it to the house.

**AfroDawg can confirm this as he was on the team as well.**

The 4OT game was in 1990. The game where Cam hit the FTs to send it to OT was in 1991. We won in only one OT that day.

I loved the signature one-armed behind the ear tomahawk dunks that he would consistently throw in Shaq's face (recall a couple of those in Baton Rouge in 90/91) - Shaq was scared to get more of it in Starkville later in the year and sat out.</p>

Don't remember snow. I do remember State had to hit several buzzer-beaters to extend the game, and one of them was a layup after a steal that happened as a State guy tried to foul the ballhandler and clattered into him. Disclaimer: I was a kid and everybody stood up for the end of all those OTs and I missed a lot.

The four OT game was 1990. Down the stretch, it was a shootout between Greg Carter and Gerald Glass of OM. They both were shooting lights out. If I remember correctly, Carter hit a turnaround shot from just outside the elbow to send it to OT. Then, don't remember which OT it was but OM inbounded with seconds left and State was guarding Glass with 3 people and he still buried a 3. In another OT, that little punk PG for OM hit a 3-point bank shot to either tie it late or put OM ahead. Remember Ed Murphy looking at Richard Williams as the game was going to the 4th OT and motioning like a coin-flip (to decide it) and them both laughing.

In 1991, it was the day Jackie Wayne was officially introduced as head football coach. I was sitting about 2 rows behind the OM bench and when Smoke Burns was fouled and getting ready to shoot, Sean Murphy looked at his dad and made the "choke" sign with his hands and said, "He'll choke... He won't make both..." Needless to say, we jumped on his *** after that when Burns made both. If we don't win that game, we probably wouldn't have won the SEC Championship that year.

on the sidelines and it looked like Keith Hooper had absolutely knocked it out. They awarded the ball to us though and that led to Smoke's FTs.

I was playing in a church league game in high school, and the good guys were down by 1. I stole the ball with a few seconds left, drove the length of the court, and went up for a left-handed layup, but was completely hammered by none other than your beloved Chauncey Godwin. It was an obvious intentional foul, but the refs coddled Tupelo's favorite son (or I guess it's possible that we didn't have that 2-shot rule in church league), and I was left with a 1+1, no time left...

Somehow, I mustered enough sack to sink the first one -- like Burns', it hit every part of the iron but rattled home -- so I did have my One Shining Moment. Until I missed the next one and we lost in OT. ****, that still pisses me off.
