Watched the UK Clemson bowl game from 2006....

Watched the 6 minute highlight reel on YouTube recently, and talk about a fun team to watch. Offense was explosive, special teams were strong, defense could thump. Did not hurt that we had a solid QB in Woodson, strong WR core with Keenan, Stevie, and Dicky Lyons, Tamme at TE, and Little at RB. Offensive line was big and strong but did not send a bunch to the league.

Defense had Jeremey and Myron on the Dline, Wesely and Braxton at Lb, and Trevard at DB.

The thing I noticed and how it applies to this team now is the attitude and leadership on that team we so much better. Brooks was tough and a leader and his teams followed his lead. Watch the hits that team put on people. Watch the offense and how dynamic it was with threats everywhere. Remember the blocks Dicky put on db's and safeties?

Unfortunately we cannot teach Stoops how to be tough, but our next coach could use that team as a great model. Get a team with thumpers on defense that can tackle, a dynamic offense, and create a culture around the team. The lack of a culture has held UK back more than anything the last few decades.

Also, watching that 2006 team you could tell how well coached, fundamental and strong they were. Brooks teams were always all of the above. Unfortunately, Stoops's teams don't look well coached, fundamental, or strong. No matter how talented a team is you must always be all of the above and we are not.

Loved that team. I think there's a great point here about believing in and following the leadership of your coach.

Watching UL who has average talent (besides at qb) but plays across the board like they can and will beat anyone and then watching us who have similar talent go out and play like we just hope we might be able to get a win. You can see it in how they play, their confidence, body language.

It makes a big difference and it trickles down from the coach. It pisses me off every time I hear Stoops say well a victory is a victory. It wasn't pretty but we got one so well take it.

That was a nice team with a good coaching staff.
I remember hearing Joker say that Rich Brooks could coach, teach and illustrate how to play every position on the field, including kicking, punting and long-snapping.

I think if Schiano grabbed the right guys to recruit he could do well. He took a program with a poor history and won big at Rutgers, he has ties to Miami and can recruit South Florida, and with him being at Ohio State can also help with Ohio. Outside of recruiting rankings in year 1-2 we have not done anything magical. Take into account those rankings were bolstered by 4 stars like Baker, Elam, Hatcher, McWilson... who have not played like 4 stars on the collegiate level. Trevard, Wesley, Braxton, Tamme were 2-3 stars, and while it does not look good on signing day it did on the field. I would rather have a coach who can evaluate and project players, has a system and recruits to it, and can DEVELOP players. Right now it seems like we have an elementary PE teacher who rolls the ball out there and says "here, go play."

Yep, the same experienced head coach who knew what it took to turn a program around. I wish we had one of those now.

Correction, they sent no one to the league. Larry Warford was our first OL drafted in 2 decades.

The 2006 OL was average.

Obviously it worked since the team started performing better. He also replaced his DC. This was after probation as well.

The 06 game in Knoxville--which we should've won--may have been one of the hardest hitting games I've seen us play in person. They were carting vollies off the field all afternoon.

I have followed Schiano for a long time. He is not the answer, he is disliked by many former players. I don't want the dude here ever.

Yes he was disliked because he was hired to put discipline into the tampa bay squad.

Not getting Brooks to stick around longer is one of the biggest failures in UK athletics history.

He was building a stable program just as the east began to slide a bit, thus opening a window of opportunity that doesn't come around very often.

We should just now be thinking about a post Brooks era. If we were, I believe the program would be competitive and stable. Add in all the new football focused upgrades and state of the art training facility, as well as program moral no doubt being at an all time high, I think UK would be in a prime position to hire a top coach that could take the next step.

Wish in one hand and **** in the other I guess.
