I know we've talked about this before, but not sure we ever figured out anything.

I just switched to DirecTV for tv and ATT U-Verse for internet.

Went to ESPN3; logged into my U-Verse account and "not authorized user" appeared.

Anyone else with DirecTV and U-Verse able to get either of these sites? If so, what did I do wrong?

I'm pretty sure it goes by your cable provider. You can watch espn3 with your att login but to do the watchespn app you have to have one of the tv providers listed to access it.

That is correct. I can access ESPN3 with my U-Verse (internet) login. I have no access to WatchESPN because I have Directv.

I thought watchespn worked with direct tv. Which providers does that work with?

Pro Tip:
Get an AppleTV. It's $99 with no recurring fees and comes with the WatchESPN app which allows for streaming games in full HD to your TV. (Other things like Roku probably do this too, I just don't use them.) And it all does work with DirecTV, I have never had any problem getting games (there are occasion pissing matches where Comcast blacks their games out, but can't be helped). Bought the AppleTVs (I have 3) mainly for the kids but have watched tons of baseball and football games on it over the years. If you are invested in the iTunes eco-system then AppleTV is a no brainer.

The first key thing to understand is that WatchESPN and ESPN3 are two entirely different things.

WatchESPN is an app that will allow you to stream events that are on any of the ESPN channels, and access is dictated by your cable/sat provider. Pretty much everyone is approved except DirectTV

ESPN3 is just a group of internet based channels that ESPN provides, and access to it is dictated by your internet provider. Most major providers are approved along with quite a few smaller ones

I have DirectTV, and I can use WatchESPN to stream ESPN3 channels, but not something that's live on one of their cable channels like ESPN2 because DTV is not an approved provider for it. I think that this is were a lot of people get confused.

Ding, ding, a correct response. WatchESPN=not possible on Directv. I just switched to Dish, and now I have WatchESPN, in addition to the ESPN3 that I've long gotten with my cable internet provider (Charter). Charter has WatchESPN, but since I don't get cable TV from them, I'm blocked. Not a problem anymore with Dish.
