Every play we ran, they had 2 linebackers or any combination of a linebacker and a d-back keying in on Dixon. The key to stopping the option is to stay disciplined to your assignments and CONTAIN. Neither year did they do that. In the second half against Auburn, we quit blitzing and started containing and sure enough, it left us in a position to win the thing (we just couldn't execute when we had to on offense.. but defense did their job). When you over commit to fakes and reads, just like Ole Miss has done both years, it leaves your defense incredibly vulnerable because that is the whole point... they are playing into what we want them to do... commit to one thing before we make a read, we go the opposite way and make them pay. Also, just like you said, the screen ate them up, too.. why? Because we would dare them to blitz and they did... every time. Any play is made easier when you know exactly what the defense is gonna do (just ask Drew Brees, Peyton Manning, or Tom Brady).Todd4State said:was in 09, we ran the zone read all over their ***. That had to have been the easiest game Les has ever called in his life.
Then in 10, they sold out to stop Ballard, but in doing so, we completely torched their *** on screens. I mean, it was like we were getting 70 yards on a screen pass every single time. How does that happen? And it was so obvious- you would see Relf drop back and about seven or eight Bears in the backfield, and then Relf just flips is over their head to Perkins and it was off to the races.
I seriously have to wonder if Dan is over on the sidelines just trying to contain his laughter at their cluster17 of a defense. And what's scary is they may be even worse this year. They could be Ron Cooper bad. I'm being dead serious. It's a poor scheme, they don't tackle, poor fundamentally- it's a train wreck. Thank God the Landshark only requires one hand, otherwise they may not be able to pull that off.
That's a SPS remembers quality quote right there.Todd4State said:Thank God the Landshark only requires one hand, otherwise they may not be able to pull that off.
