The lack of a JV team this year does not bode well considering their little league senior team has around 18-20 players. I had heard that participation numbers are down in other sports as well. How do you increase engagement? A question that most localities will soon face with the current trend in sports.

Participation in athletics has been decimated by cell phones. Kids get cell phones at the age of 10-11 and they would much rather play on them then go outside or play little league sports. By the time they get to high school the die is cast, and people are seeing much less participation across the board at all schools in all sports.

If you don't have parents who will channel kids into athletics, or even going outside, then they will often choose the ease of a phone over the challenge of athletics. I realize that it is a pain to run your kid to practice and serve as their chauffeur. But that is what it takes. A lot of parents use the phone as a babysitter. Lazy parents, end up raising lazy kids. More screen free time would benefit all of us, kids and adults.

Everyone’s face is in their cell phones these days - driving cars, eating at restaurants, etc. Hell, at my fitness center tons of people sit on the weight machines doing nothing but fiddling with their phones while I wait to get on. My patience is now getting thin and something will give. Welcome to the new world. Not good.

These last two posters make a valid point. We are just a lazy society in general these days and as a result, the desire to really WORK for anything just is not there. Sad to think that includes working to be a potential pro athlete but it is apparently headed in that direction.

Then when you add in all the concerns about concussions, etc. you can see the decline that people are talking about. Some localities are going to 8 man games, which I cannot even understand. So I don't know if they are supposed to be safer or whatever.

In the case of Waynesboro, it does seem very odd that there would be almost a TOTAL lack of interest, as opposed to just limited. How does a school with (I assume) an enrollment of 900-1,000 or more not have enough healthy male bodies that would like to play football? I wonder if there is more to the story than meets the eye.

True. I am glad those people come out and support financially but fan engagement is important for players. The atmosphere an engaged fanbase brings is so much a part of successful programs.

Should have to be 18 to carry a cell phone in school IMO

Jamestown has about 1200 and now has only 18 able body players. Embarrassing to say the least. Grafton has a few more players, not many, and also around 1200.

I used to feel that way while my daughters were in school, then trouble occured st school and i was glad she let me know she was ok. Its stil a discipline issue, they can have it but it must be used properly and not as a toy. That was my responsibility to see to it that it was used correctly .

It is my understanding it does, so Spotswood will get the 20 pts for the win and no riders since Waynesboro has not won any games. Any of Spotswood's opponents will get another point on their riders as is appropriate. That's the way I understand it anyway.

In this case it neither helps or hurts Spotswood since that is what they would have gotten if they played. If Waynesboro had cancelled their season before it ever started then Spotswood could have decided to play a 9 game schedule which would have helped their overall average. A 20 point week in 3A is not good to be honest so it will drop their avg slightly but will not cost them the top seed in their region in any case.

Correct, it’s like a normal win for the team receiving the forfeit. Of course it’s another down week with no play. Also correct if the team cancels before the season you can declare it as no game and have 9 games. Lafayette did this with Bruton last year. At that time no replacement game could be found. The difference allowed Lafayette to out point Lake Taylor for #1 seed.

Let’s be honest, they should have made a run last year as a top seed. They will have played a good many of the teams behind them and won convincingly so chances are good for them to advance through the playoffs for a ways in my opinion.

Spotswood will be gone should they get matched up with another Seminole team in the first round again.
That's a fact. The Valley isn't strong. Neither is the Jefferson. Phoebus, Hopewell, Lafayette, and LB are playing at a much higher level. I don't know if anyone in the Seminole can hang with them but they are probably better than Spotswood. I'd love for the Blazers to prove me a liar.

I don't know why, but its sounding as if Spotswood got destroyed last year against Liberty in the playoffs. If memory serves me correctly, it was a last second (end) win for Liberty who also won the next week and played very tough against the eventual state champion. 3 point game going into 4th quarter.

Not saying Spotswood wins a single game in playoffs, but to just say it as such if they play Seminole team it's an automatic loss doesn't make much sense

Liberty beat them 40 to 38. However if they play Liberty this year you can go ahead and chalk that up as a win.
