We are in a tough spot with Mullen and Russell...

Personally, I would commit to Russell for the next two years and alter my offense to fit his strengths. I would go sign the 2 MS JucoWR's Bester (just committed to UK, no MSU offer) and Lance Ray (we are recruiting him). And do whatever I could to sign the LT, Glauser.

But Mullen won't change his offense. He will not go to a Texas Tech/Ok. State type spread and we might not be able to get the personel to run it. It's clear he wants a QB that can run and if he won't change the offense we need to be able to run the read option. So whatwill he do? Will he continue torotate QB's and run my blood pressure up as we continue togo 3and out, or will he turn over the reigns to a 5'10 QB with poor mechanics who is better suited for his system?

But having him run the read option is just silly. Jerry Franklin destroyed Russell on one play, and it just isn't necessary.

In a pass first spread offense he would be damn good. I think he fits a pro offense pretty well too.

He is the highest rated QB we have signed in the Scout.com/Rivals.com era. And at times I think he is the best pure passer we have ever had at MSU (not really a bold statement). Yet I just do not see him flourishing in Dan Mullen's system and Mullen does not seem willing or able to make the necessary adjustments.

Without Tim Tebow running his offense, Mullen looks extremely mediocre as a coach.

quick-hitting, shorter pass routes instead of running our WR's 15-20 yards deep. With our OL giving a small amount of protection, we should be popping quick slants and dumping the ball off to our backs over the middle of the field. Our play-calling hasn't helped Tyler at all. Not to mention all of the drops we see every game.

We drop passes left and right. When we need a big play, we get 17 enough time, get a WR open deep, throw, and one of these happen:<div>
</div><div>1) off the fingertips</div><div>2) no adjustment to catch a pass that isn't just picture perfect</div><div>3) no fighting the db for the ball</div><div>4) drop</div><div>
</div><div>I don't think we completed a single deep ball. But we threw a lot. Most were pretty good throws. Our WRs just plain suck. They should be depth players at best. We have no legitimate SEC WRs on our team. None.</div><div>
</div><div>Sure the OL wasn't great. But they played well enough to move the ball at times. Same goes for 17. Played good, not great. WRs? Pitiful.</div>

He agrees that Dan Mullen doesn't know what to do with a passing QB.

and Urban Meyer/Mullen never pulled him from the game on 3rd and 2 so the backup QB could throw an incompletion.

Honestly, I was disappointed to see Favre in there at the end of the game. Russell could have used the reps.

is that we just spent all spring and fall practicing a run first offense. I don't think we have been able to adjust to having to pass when the defense doesn't have to respect the run. Coming into the season our passing game was based on play action and the defense having to gaurd against the run.

We have a hard time reading coverages and getting on the same page; when we do the timing is usually off. I would be interested to see if our passing game can improve during the bowl practices (assuming we make one).

Chris Smith is an SEC receiver. He'd be the #3 guy on any SEC team, and I'll defend that till the end. Is he the #1 we act like he is? No, but C. Smith is a legit receiver and I'm pissed we didn't RS him.

Next season with Relf not being an option and Morrow guaranteed playing time, I think people will be quite pleased.

Russell at QB, Smith-Johnson-Heavens/Clark-Morrow.... doesn't sound bad to me. Bumphis is a backup as far as I'm concerned.

and yesterday, all would have been good catches but agree with earlier post, our WRs dont go getthe ball. Alex Smith played San Diego State and New Mexico and Utah State, not exactly LSU and Bama. Mullen wont change, doesnt seem to know how

With Tyler in it seems like every play has a bunch of intermediate to long pass routes. The coaches know what the QB's are comfortable with more than me, but it seems like we don't mix in as many quick-hitters as when Relf or Favre are in. That quick pass out to Robert Johnson that Favre ran so many times needs to be a regular play for any QB we have in. Chris Smith and Malcolm Johnson could beat their man with a quick slant at least 80% of the time. Like others have said, maybe it has to do with the fact that we went into the year with a "Relf centered" offense. Maybe we'll see more adjustments with Tyler as the guy next year. For now, the play calling just seems odd.

I will say just as I did last week, Malcolm Johnson is quickly becoming our best WR. He is only going to get better.

Thing about Bumphis is that he came in and provided a spark his freshman year in an area where we had been atrocious, not only because of WR play but from ****** QB play and Crooms recruiting. He came in and showed a glimmer of hope, but never really progressed in his development. Big Head? Who knows but it does happen to freshman who play a lot early.

QB sitution: Prescott will push for a lot of playing time next year and it wouldn't surprise me if he pushes for the starting job at end of season. He's the round peg for the round void in Mullen's offense. Big QB who can run and be a pocket passer.
