A much deserved honor that is long over due.

Thank God we have someone in power who realizes not. Thank God we don't have a stubborn, hard headed, POS in charge anymore.

Mississippi State will retire the jersey of former Bulldog basketball great Bailey Howell during halftime ceremonies at the Feb. 7 basketball game against Arkansas . Bailey will be the first basketball player to have his jersey retired. A banner will be on permanent display commemorating the retirement in Humphrey Coliseum.

You took the words right out of my mouth. All of those are very deserving of a banner at the very least

And also for football, I think it's time to retire Keefer's 21, Rodney Stower's 97? (I think), and Earnest Garner's (54).

Or at the very least, do what Ole Miss does and honor them with a player either wearing that jersey # or a patch with that player's jersey #, particularly in Keefer's case.

Also, I think we need a ring of honor for great players like Johnie Cooks, Jackie Parker, Jerious Norwood, and of course Todd Jordan. (Sarcasm on the last name)

So you would retire the jersey for a player who died, but for other great players you would just have a ring of honor?

Look, I am not trying to be insensitive but Stowers and Garner were not superstar football players. Again, I am not trying to minimize their deaths, but I don't think that is what jersey retiring should be about. Should we have some sort of memorial somewhere that fans could see at all home games? Yes. It would be a great to have a little museum type place for old artifacts and such, like the Liberty Bowl trophy, and the other old bowl trophies that are probably gathering dust somewhere. Were we to happen to be in possession of the Golden Egg, put it in there for fans to see and enjoy. All that to say that's the kind of forum where you could commemorate Stowers, Garner and others. I just don't happen to think their jerseys should be retired.

Cooks, Bond, Norwood, Keffer, Shorty McWilliams....yes. Retire them.

Or doing any of those things. In fact those are good ideas

My thinking is that the three players who died, well two of them, probably don't deserve to be put on the ring of honor for their play on the field, and they are already being honored once, so I didn't see a need to put them in the ring.

To me, The Ring of Honor should be solely based on what players did on the field.

However, if Byrne or whoever makes those decisions wanted to retire their numbers I would have no problem with it.

Plus, by allowing players to wear the jersey's of the player's who died as a memorial, you're not retiring the jersey. It would still be in circulation, it would just be awarded to someone. Which is essentially what Ole Miss does with Chucky Mullins jersey, unless someone is really attached to their number, then they could wear a patch.

...that generally the only numbers that should be retired are those numbers of players associated with Mississippi State University who've been inducted in their respective sports' hall of fames.

In other words, Bailey Howell, Jackie Parker, and D.D. Lewis should be the only ones from basketball and football who should currently have retired numbers.

Baseball is a different matter since the collegiate baseball Hall of Fame is much newer.

You gotta think Byrne will do something special for Jack...while Jack is still alive and kicking and can appreciate it.

As much as I liked him as a basketball player, I still can't believe he transferred to Murray State when Ron Greene left MSU after one season.

You left out Babe McCarthy.

In the early 1960's the Babe was *****-slapping Kentucky on a regular basis.

Any tradition MSU basketball enjoys goes back to the Babe Mc era.

I say the next banner that is raised should be the Babe's.

And yes, Richard Williams deserves one too (if the purtanical MSU fanbase will allow it).

I know they use to have them hanging on the fence. I think they are now in the Blue Parrot at Rick's.

.....but I've never understood why we have continued to not use #21 long after Keffer died, while at the same time continuing to use #97. I completely understand why you might not want to use #21 so long as teammates of Keffer remained on the team, but at this point it's been 12 years and we're still not using it, for no apparent reason.

I'm not diminishing what either of these guys meant to their families or teammates, but I don't think it's good policy to permanently retire player numbers due to death, unless the player in question was likely to have his number retired anyway. And using #97 while not using #21 is nearly offensively inconsistent. Use them both, or don't use them both.

And retirement of numbers in football should be used very, very sparingly. With a 105-man roster, you need as many of the 99 available numbers as possible. I'm not sure that any former MSU player thus far is completely deserving of the honor.

...and I wouldn't be surprised if Polk's is as well in maybe 2-3 years. Is Buddy Myer's number retired (did he even have one?)?

just "honored". players were still able to use those numbers if they wanted. i could be wrong, though.

if you want to really retire numbers, then you have to be VERY selective. i would rather honor numbers than retire them, but i do like the idea - you should be proud of your history.

Plus, I think he has always been at his best at basketball. And if we ever move into a new coliseum...Cristil Coliseum.

If you start retiring numbers, in some sports you can run into limitations on the numbers available for other players. Like football. You have 85 scholarship players plus walkons. You retire 10 or so numbers and you're going to run out and wind up using the same number for 2 different players like some schools occasionally do. And that drives me crazy.

I think you're correct. I believe that is the distinction between "retiring a number" and "retiring a jersey." Retired number = no one ever wears it again, while retired jersey = honored in someway but the number is still available for use.
