Back to the "largest alumni base". This is true. However it doesn't explain why they went from terrible to NC Champion.

You would think if an alumni base that large is key. They'd been better many years prior. They were awesome in basketball but should have been champs every year if the alumni base was such a big factor.
It's the age old argument all these people put forward about baseball. Such and such has all this money, they could be good if they wanted to. Well why don't they do it? What's the downside?

Money and portal are the two clear factors as to why they were unable before. It has leveled the playing field. Those that were successful previously (i.e. "the blue bloods" and the wannabes) were quick to just amplify their existing efforts, while the have nots are figuring it out....some much faster than others.

The have a larger alumni network than Alabama. We are not in their league.
Indiana population is right at 7 million, so I suppose it's natural that they'd have a larger alumni base than MSU, OM, and even Alabama. We (or me, at least) never have thought of Indiana being a football powerhouse.

Is there anything NOT true though in your statement?

How many teams in the playoffs have all of those, probably all of them unless maybe Tuland and JMU?
Yeah, I was going to ask the same question along with one more

If those aren’t problems, then what is? I’m sure that even the biggest pessimists on this board would love our university to prove them wrong whenever they feel like getting around to it

That team is loaded with older experienced talent. They ARE well coached but the talent and experience has more to do with it than anything. That's a young pro team 15 years ago.
You really like to hear yourself talk don’t you!

Not sure why you're looking at state pop., IU Bloomington is close to 50k students

They had that same alumni base when they were losing all those years. This is mostly about Curt Cignetti being the best coach in the country. He truly seems to be a coach that can take his and beat yours or take yours and beat his. Every school they played in the playoffs supposedly had way better talent.

I get your point but state population matters because it’s directly linked to the instate universities. If nothing more than tuition and geography.

This is MSU’s biggest weakness. Thank goodness we are located within reasonable driving distance to 4 decent sized metros.

IU is kind of set up for this, multiple national championships in basketball, flagship school of the state, corporate backing in Indianapolis and Chicago, Eli Lily backing.

I followed them and attended games in Assembly Hall when RMK was coaching them. They have a big following, only now it’s shifting to football.

it must honestly suck to be this pessimistic about everything in life. is there literally any joy there?
LOL. I’m not pessimistic about everything, but state football? Yeah you could say I’m glass half empty there.
